From my experience it's better to match the intensity of your partner. In my school we have a guy that would fit the definition of a "spaz" but he is fairly easy to deal as long as you can keep up and have decent technique. But like I said, I think it's best to match your partner. There are a few guys that when we hit the mat together we already know it's going to be all out. But even at, that we are still careful not to cause any injuries.

without technique, going hard will get someone fucking hurt....

i've been hurt by dumbass white belts before, even though i'm twice as good as they are. it's simply because they haul ass jumping around, and sooner or later, they do something stupid and fucking hurt someone...

example:

this spaz whitebelt in my class is a former wrestler. i get him in this tight triangle, and instead of using the technique that we had just worked on that day in class, he tries to stand up and do a fucking front flip over me!

i tried to let go with my legs but it was too late, as my triangle was all the way locked in...

he landed on top of my ankles, and i heard his neck crack about 10 times...

not only did my ankles crack together and almost fuck me up, but for a split second i thought i had broken his neck...

and it scared the hell out of me...

i was like "are you ok?"

"yeah"

"well don't you EVER FUCKING DO THAT AGAIN! YOU HEAR ME?"

and now i won't roll with some whitebelts b/c of this, and instances like this...

i've been training for too long to let some stupid ass spaz whitebelt to fuck me up by doing something stupid....

and to the thread starter and anyone who is supporting him:

what are you 18 years old? 16? you guys wanna be spaztic and jump around and be fancy and energetic, stick to people your own age...

don't come roll with me or anyone older than i am, b/c we don't want you doing something stupid and getting both of us hurt. by the way, i'm only 25...

yeah that's got to be it dude...

they don't wanna roll with this guy b/c they think he'll beat them...

????????

no, that's not it...

odds are, the higher your belt rank, the more you want to keep rolling as you get older and older...

some kid comes in who is too aggressive and flops around too much runs the risk of fucking you up by doing something stupid...

why would a higher belt rank wanna roll with a spastic whitebelt? they get nothing out of it, except pulled fingers, clawed ears, and scratches on their necks. plus, they are rolling with someone who is the antithesis of every competitor they'll see in a competition...

just cuz one wrestler did something EXTREMELY stupid doesnt mean that everyone would do shit like that...when u said something about the triangle i figured that some kid picked u up and slammed the shit out of u, not tried to do a front flip....i have never injured anyone in wrestling while practicing, and i dont intend to do it any time soon...im very careful with everything i do, trust me...have u read all these posts??? man everyone had good stuff to say on both sides of the argument...just cuz one wrestler did something stupid that doesnt mean that all wrestlers would do that...thats like if u got robbed by a black person and then hated all black people after that

yet they are rolling with someone that is acting just like someone would in a fight in a real situation...like i said before, if u want to learn self defense, sparring with "spazzes" is completely necessary...because thats how most people are going to fight on the ground, just by spazzing and trying to use power and no technique

oh, and by the way, that kid that tried to do the front flip in the triangle is retarded...why not just the rampage/arona style slam if he was gonna try some crazy shit

*huge sigh*

dude, did i say that all wrestlers acted like idiots? if i did, please quote me so that i can see for myself...

now, there is something inherently ridiculous about some whitebelt showing up and going balls to the wall. i mean, it's like showing up to mcdonalds, with a burger king cup in your had and you want a refill...

IT MAKES NO SENSE!

do you see elite level bjj guys being spastic? do you see them hopping around and doing flips and shit?

no, they move fast while executing proper technique, and b/c of this, they are where they are...

just b/c you've executed 100 armbars in practice, doesn't mean it's time to start doing flying armbars and flipping around with them. in fact, it also doesn't mean that you are going to get out of one, when the damn thing is all the way locked on your ass...

that's something else that spastic whitebelts do, they continue to resist the armbar by flopping around so the higher belt guy has to let go or break the kid's arm...

it's stupid to flip around and go full speed b/c you miss so many submission opportunities, guard passes, and technical advantages than if you were moving a slower and more deliberately...

you haven't been rolling long enough to be able to see those moves by moving that fast...

ok dude...

let's look at this:

a brown belt who rolls with spastic whitebelts competes in a tournament against a brown belt that rolls with technically sound bjj practitioners, in a manner that you would call "lazy."

who wins this match?

oh that's what you think is cool? the rampage/arona slam?

it's much easier to let go a triangle if someone stands straight up, than if they launch themselves over you...

there is also the ability for the guy on the ground to hook a leg so he can't be lifted...

it's not as easy as it looks to just pick somebody up in a triangle and slam them dude...

you are definitely a spaz...

All I have offer from this is.....

Polynikes you are disgracing that name! That greek hero was the king of 'spazzing' out! And damnit greeks were the wrestlers, so be on our side for fuck's sake! Youre more like fucking Xerxes!

xerxes!!!!!?????

thrash yourself muthafucka!!!!

i'm all about wrestling techniques man. i swear i am...

in fact, i think that a wrestler who moves to bjj will be a better grappler than a straight bjj guy...

but i hate spastic grapplers man. they've hurt me too many times with their bullshit...

i don't care about rolling fast. in fact, i roll as fast as my opponent's skill level allows. anyone that is my level or higher, i'm rolling fast, but i use technique, and i'm not a dangerous spaz....

there is a difference...

i mean, especially during the regular training week when there is no tournaments coming up. during a regular training week, just calm down and absorb the techniques. don't risk getting injured...

and polynikes was the master of controlled violence! taking it to the red zone, but keeping one notch below and still in the orange zone...

Fedor4life and Greoric: There are other ways to train. I don't do the same type of grappling every day, and I don't spar at the same level either. Sometimes I go really light, other times really intense. It depends on what my goals are. But if I want to improve my grappling overall, I have to do both kinds of training.

Do this experiment for a few weeks instead of just going to BJJ practice. Go for a 2.5-3 mile run beforehand then go to practice. Or if that is too easy, run 5-6 miles. Now at practice you will already be tired, so if you want to not die you have to roll a little smarter and use a little less technique. I do this type of training when I want to work on improving my technique.

If you want an even harder workout, run with your gi on. Then grapple with your gi on even if your opponent does not wear one. I guarentee it will be much harder; however, your technique and anaerobic strength will improve significantly. Then when you take off the gi and grapple fresh, you will be a monster!

Hell no!! Controlled Violence?!!?!?! Spartans in general were gods of intensity and just straight beast, Polynikes was an exception even among the spartans! That motherfucker Redlined it!

But all kidding aside. Absolutly, there is a time for technique, which is drilling or even percentage grappling. But when it comes to the core training for competition that intensity is key. And please dont mistake my saying intensity for spazzing, powering or bullrushing. When i say intense i mean a higher number of transitions of postions in a roll. I see it hard though when these new guys are injuring you. Nothing as a result of just trying to power or rush ever ends up in an injury from where I train. I was discussing this already with someone else earlier on the thread i believe.

Frodo man, I have been trying to get this across for what seems like forever. I do seperate live and drilling. Drilling is for technique and Live is for real situation pressure of getting those techniques proficient.

Be agressive when its required, being agressive all the time will get you very tired when rolling with someone of equal skill/greater skill then you. They will relax and defend and when you're sucking air they can take advantage.

ok, that wasnt the point i was trying to make...obviously for sport rolling with spastic people has no place, but if u want it for self defense, its good practice

that seems pretty intense...i think i might have to try it tho

Secondly, I roll easy with the black and brown belts because they usually ask me to. They tend to be the most traditional, and I don't want to offend them by going intense when they've asked me not too. The lower belts, however, tend to be less traditional so I don't feel like i should not get a good intense match going. If they asked me not to go live, and gave me a percentage, then I would respect that as well.

Do you think that maybe they ask you to calm down because you're spazzing and need to alm the fuck down?! And that maybe the lower belts don't say anything because they don't know any better, especially since wrestlers do well at lower ranks, convincing them that you have better technique.
This isn't better BJJ technique it's better wrestling technique.
