Starting @ 5:33, Andre says in hip hop, you first have to be hip. And the closer you get to 40 the further you are away from that. He says when people that age try to imitate what is new and current, people can spot it and it becomes embarrassing. He says at 40 he would no longer have anything to add to the game. He compares it to being a boxer.

I thought this was interesting and I never thought about how hip hop guys have a limited window of opportunity, kind of like fighters. And it isn't that way with other artists, like rock n roll guys, who can continue touring and putting out albums until the day they die.

Rick Ross is like 50 isn't he lol.

Edit* okay he's 40 but still.

Once explosiveness declines, it's hard to rap effectively.

It's probably because hip hop isn't something that appeals to many people once they grow up, get jobs and start families

It's kinda true... Although some guys just keep going, they definitely lose the fire with freestyles and so on... Hungry rappers need to put out better tunes, some have a habit of churning out terrible album after terrible album like Ice Cube because they know people will buy it regardless...

Some dudes are still bringing out the occasional tune - Premier tried to bring back a few 80s rappers in the early 00s and the tunes were sick, just nobody wanted to hear 50 year old Rakim and Big Daddy Kane rap anymore... I still remember that video of Rakim destroying DMX and Jay-Z in a battle... Puts a lot of shit into perspective.

New rappers just aren't up to the standard.

Another problem with hip hop is that the kids are the only ones that spend money on it and they think Kanye, Wiz Khalifa and Drake are hot shit.

Yeah. Andre made a good point by saying that when you're older, you're no longer on the street at that level. He said when he was young he got into hip hop to fuck shit up. He says you don't feel like that when you get older. And I guess it's true. Pretty similar to fighting in a lot of ways, and I never thought about that. Pretty sure BJ Penn said the exact same quote verbatim about when he started fighting and how his attitude changed as he got older. Plus hip hop is just completely geared towards youth and youthful attitude.

Never saw that. Anyone have a link?

I'm willing to bet that the rock n roll guys where saying the same things when they where young. Don't trust anyone over 30 sounds good until you're actually 30.

Hip hop is an aging beast.
It was great once.
The Beasties were different, fun, sample heavy rap was the shit, it was awesome.
Gangsta rap was hard, and a lot of it was clever.
The last ten years, idk. Seems like the rise of Kanye killed any interest I had in that direction. He's like the Conor of hip hop, completely overrated by himself and his fans, and hip hop is dumber for his presence.

That's true to a degree, but you still have guys like Rugged Man and Brother Ali who hang in the wings and keep that hunger, Clubber Lang style for years - when Rugged blew up again on 2007 he was pushing 40 but still crushed a solid amount for tunes... I guess he was still very much on the street though. Same with Ali... It's just like Mickey says "you got civilised - the worst thing that could happen to a savage like you were" or whatever he says. Money... Pussy too... Makes them all go soft.

Here's the video.

It started going off the rails with 808s, but Kanye's Late Registration and Graduation were amazing.

The video above is DMX, Jay-Z and a security guard freestyling...

No one like 40 year old guys . Not even 40 year old guys .

here 12 seconds explains better then 3000s ramblings.

That study looked at married and settle 40 year olds . Im talking the single 40 year old still trying to act 20 .

Well, There's probably something atypical about the average single 40 year old that's trying to act 20......not exactly a revelation to say nobody likes socially maladjusted man children.

You seem to make this type of comment frequently about older people, men in particular. Here's a hint , if you don't fuck up and walk in front of a bus or have shitty luck/genetics / lifestyle and get wiped out early by some disease , you're gonna age up into that bracket before you know it.

Quite funny when some early 20s kid takes a taunting approach to age , as if it's some affliction that they've avoided . It's like pointing and laughing at the guy 2 spots up from you in line for the gas chamber . Being a female = 40 is gonna be twice as traumatic for you , maybe try not to be such a dick about shit we've all gotta face.....if we are fortunate.

Yeah but what I'm saying is the rock guys aren't looked at negatively for still rocking out when they're old. It's fine for them and pretty much every other genre to still do their thing when they're retirement age. It's even applauded. Hell even punk guys like Bad Religion and Rancid aren't looked at negatively for still doing their thing when they're old. And punk is very much a youthful attitude.

But it's not like that for hip hop guys for the most part. Most people don't seem to want to hear old dudes rap.

Maybe. But as the artists age. So does their audience. It's not out of the question that tastes will change with age.
