On the undercard of UFC 218, Angela Magana came up short against Amanda Bobby Cooper, succumbing to second-round punches. Unfortunately, Magana feels as though the fight might have been stopped a little early by referee Keith Peterson.
After watching it earlier today I can see why she was visibly upset at the stoppage, Angela was defending herself regardless of the fact she looked awful in all the grappling exchanges against a fighter that often looks awful herself on the ground. That stoppage and the early one in the Kevin Lee / Michael Chiesa fight got me thinking of how easy it would be for the referee assigned to the Tony Ferguson / Khabib Nurmagoatmedov fight to make a calamitous decision, costing us the matchup of the year.
Can you imagine if Tony goes for a hail mary submission after taking 3 to 4 rounds of punishment and then the ref jumps in after interpreting Khabib's ground and pound as a tap? or even worse, we don't even get to see the 3-4 rounds of punishment because the ref jumps in thinking Tony is not defending himself intelligently when he's actually trying to set up a hail mary submission. I believe the stigma around the muslim faith could result in an unfair call being made too, discrimination in MMA is real.
I worry about these outcomes everyday, we need Khabib to be crowned king in a clean and bloody performance.
