It's an interesting attempt to rally his base, probably his most thoughtful tactic yet. While Trump himself is not a conservative or a practicing Christian, it appears some folks in his administration have gotten wise to the fact that his support stems largely from pushback against liberal movements during the Obama administration that weren't really rooted in Obama's policies. Its the right play here, since he's not getting anywhere banking on competence and clear policy vision.

I don't like the idea that we bend over backwards to accommodate certain minority groups like trans people who make up less than 1% of the population, but when it comes to the majority group that makes up to 70% of the population, we can't even allude to God. I agree with separation of Church and State, but people are making this to be a bigger deal than it is.

It's also amusing to see the implication that Trump is the first president in history to pander to people. What president hasn't thrown crumbs to dogs?
