So Joel is murdered in the beginning.

You find out that it was justified. Joel had murdered Abbys father who was the innocent surgeon we killed in Part 1.

Ellie pursues revenge just like Abby, but all they do is manage to ruin and destroy the lives of dozens of innocent people, and destroy all their friendships and relationships while chasing revenge.

Revenge made Tommy and Ellie into terrible people. Ellie murdered a pregnant woman and held an innocent little boy at knifepoint.

The moral of the story is that Revenge is pointless and will just ruin everyone’s lives. Including innocent people.

Ellie gave her side of the story:

“I have to go. I can’t eat. I can’t sleep. I can’t live like this”

She couldn’t live her day to day life while knowing Joel’s killer Was free.
