We are comparing a comedy/horror to a pure horror classic?

Nightmare by 1st round KO.

To add just for some context:

Scream was good theatre fun. Can't knock it for that. It was a nice kickstart to a genre that was in a severe decline.

Nightmare was a purely original and brilliant concept that worked masterfully in a genre that was at the time, full of Halloween or Friday the 13th wannabe movies. Wes both wrote and directed it so its his own masterwork.

Legacy wise, its not close. Freddy is an iconic villain and that movie scared the shit out of a generation. The concept alone of a guy terrorizing you in your dreams was genius.

Like I said, two different films. Scream did nothing for me as far as scares go. Nightmare was an entirely different beast. It was just a superior film all things considering.

Agree with everything you say here. Freddie is one of the Big Three, up there with Michael and Jason. Ghostface is B-tier. He doesn't have superhuman powers. He's just a string of psychos wearing the same costume.

the scene with the girl standing at the door in the school in Elm Street was terrifying to an 8 year old me, and Freddy was literally the stuff of nightmares

First Elm Street film is better than ALL of the Scream films individually, but Scream is a better franchise, i'm not sure you are ever going to get a better bad guy than Freddy Krueger though

I never really liked Scream. I think the first Elm Street movie is way better.

I also think New Nightmare is criminally overlooked...

I felt like scream was him redoing new nightmare and actually getting it right. I hadnt seen new nightmare until a few years ago and the whole time I was like "is this supposed to be like scream?" I fucking hate "META" stuff, its fucking lazy and dumb.

The OG Nightmare on Elm Street is probably one of the best horror move franchise starters ever. Scream is a great introduction to the horror genre without actually being scary.

That movie is boiled hot garbage, I really hated it.

Ya, he seemed like the flavour of the year villain, but faded pretty quick.

The first Scream was a masterpiece. It not only was an homage to the horror industry as a whole, but also broke new ground with the "horror-suspense" genre. Which also kind of makes it not quite as good on rewatch. Once you know the big twist and who the killer(s) are, it loses some luster. Scream 2 is also very good IMO.
