A day in the life of a Roman soldier - Robert Garland

Heh heh, he said "scutum."

Seems like a bit of idealistic liberal nonsense.

Like he just wants to survive to get his land and doesn't care about the glory of Rome, really? That's civilian thinking of how soldiers think. Bullshit.

 You don't think at least a few soldiers thought that way? I know a few of my buddies who served don't care for jingoism.

They were still human, not robots or zombies. 25 years of service, it takes more than just the glory of Rome. That's why threat of mutiny against the generals or government for higher pay and less years of service wasn't uncommon.

It is upbringing and ideology. If you are ideologue like this western converts to radical islam who join ISIS or whatever your mind is different. Same with hardcore patriots etc or anything. Also training helps. But some small % just wired different.

Like we all have desire to fight. Men evolved to be tribal and like war when it in to there favor. But some men are into it they go become special forces and lafer mercenaries. Nothing against those brave guys but it different mindset to be in military and then to actively want to regularly behind enemy line part of assasination and counter strikes.

We are fighing species like all. But prefer odds in our favor and power over others. But some people like mercenaries in Colombia, Yemen, Ukraine and syria or Somalia are just wired different many of them are American, or Russian or Colombian former special forces who just love fighting.

I agree. It is natural to fight either we do it with words of violence but even words are violent. I think when Rome became to big it collapsed because people felt no identity. It made more sense to figh for your race or ethnic group or religion or combo of them then just 'Rome'. Rome expanded to big and was broken by nationalism and religion in my opinion.

I saw the weight of what he was carrying, but what was size of the average Roman soldier?

Yet that's how most soldier's looked at joining the military pre 9/11...

I just want to sign up, and survive to get my money for college, don't care about the glory of America..

Imperial regulations, though not entirely unambiguous, suggest that the minimum height for new recruits was five Roman feet, seven inches (165 cm., 5'5") ... for the army as a whole a reasonable estimate of a soldier's average height is around 170 cm (5'7")

They think it has something to do with the depersonalization of killing people (instead of fighting someone up close you're shooting them from far away, etc.), explosions, and concussions.
