There is a great thread about Jack The Ripper right now. I enjoy looking into these things but want to explain something about killers to those who don't understand. First and foremost I'm not a killer nor a psychologist. When a pathological killer (serial killer) kills he may never intend on killing again. He may put himself in similar situations with the expectation that he can control himself. Similar to smokers trying to quit. Serial killers want to stop their compulsiveness but cannot. Similar to a drunk or a drug addict. The behavior is pathological.
