A 92-year-old woman accused of fatally shooting her 72-year-old son over his plans to put her in a care home has been arrested on suspicion of murder, police in Arizona said.

Anna Mae Blessing was taken into custody on Monday at the Phoenix home she shared with her son and was being held in lieu of $500,000 bail, court officials said.

She did not enter a plea during a brief initial court appearance and it was not immediately clear if she had retained an attorney.

Ms Blessing told detectives following her arrest that she hid two handguns in the pockets of her robe and confronted her son in his bedroom, striking him with multiple rounds, the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office said in a written statement.

The suspect told investigators she tried to point the guns at her son’s 57-year-old girlfriend but the woman was able to wrestle the weapons away, according to the sheriff's office.

Ms Blessing was sitting in a reclining chair in her bedroom when she was taken into custody, after she refused to leave the house, according to court records.

She told detectives she had confronted her son over his intentions to put her in the care facility because, he had said, she was difficult to live with.

Ms Blessing also told detectives that she had intended to take her own life following the incident.

Damn, she gave no fucks.

Reminds me of uncle junior and tony soprano

When people get to be that age, you can't expect them to behave rationally. The mind goes.

My grandmother, the most devout Catholic woman you could imagine, turned into a totally different person as her mind began to fail and her need for care increased. Had she been physically capable, she would have been violent too.

Well, putting her in an old folks home is no different than sentencing her to death, so I cant really fault her. What an asshole.

He's 72. He can't care for her.

They were both old.

How old was the girlfriend that wrestled the gun away? Seeing that would be a little sad, and unfortunately a lot of funny. A 70 and 92 year old woman in a life or death struggle over a gun?

Anna Mae Blessing certainly wasn’t a blessing to her son.

Also, send this to Mayberry. If THIS sparks a massive gun debate, we are all morons. Any story involving use of a gun is not "political."

If this is going to be discussed in the war room then we definitely need to figure out how it’s Donald Trump’s and/or the Jooz’ fault.

Have you seen nursing homes in the US? Ive already determined that when I get to that point if Im still capable they'll find my brain matter splattered on the ceiling before I go willingly. Death is the superior option.

Life in a shitty nursing home is the sentence.

Yep my dads no longer at home to rational thought , there's just a constant background paranoia from him punctuated by explosions of rage over trivial everyday stuff .

What if the nursing home could’ve provided better care for her than what her son was providing?

Just based on her name, Anna Mae Blessing, I am not surprised by any of this or her mug shot. Just surprised it wasn't in like Kansas or Missouri, or Florida.

Pretty awful story tho. Also, you cannot excuse Alzheimer's without more of the story. Some elderly have perfectly intact minds, even after age 100. Based on her testimony, how it showed very clear intent, recollection of the event and her planning of it, I am thinking there was no element of dementia at play here.

In a case like this, they should just kill her. Clearly the murderer, also wants to die, is 92.... Already a burden through Medicare, don't add the prison system as well!
