He was out on a bike ride with friends and stopped to pet one of the dogs. They attacked and killed him. The dogs were not in their yard and were roaming the neighborhood at the time of the attack. Owner has a criminal history of meth possession and assault.

I don't think it's fair to blame the breed on this one. It was some methhead's dogs he probably owned for intimidation/protection. If they weren't pitbulls, it would've been some other mistreated vicious breed roaming around freely on a dirt patch, ready to jump at any passerby.

Sucks that the kid was just trying to be nice and got killed for it, all because some fucking retard thought it was cool to let their guard dogs roam around freely. You shouldn't be letting any dogs roam around freely, let alone fucking pitbulls. Guy should catch a manslaughter charge at the least.

Dog breed does matter, but there are a lot of breeds that would be just as dangerous given the same situation... pitbulls are just super common among shitty owners.

A pitbulll ban would be ineffective as the shitty owners would just go to another athletic protective breed... in order for a ban to work you'd have ban half of the known breeds over 40lbs.

I think they could at least start by ending "rescue" programs for dangerous breeds. I think half the problem is that you have scores of abused pitbulls being adopted at the pound by people who want some cheap home security, or just think pitbulls are so darn cute, without knowing a goddamn thing about where they came from. I'd really like to know the statistics on these killer dogs, and how many of them were rescues, as opposed to being raised by the owner from a pup. Bet you'd find that the VAST majority are rescues with sketchy backgrounds.
