78 year old arrested for murder defending his home

Should be giving him a medal not arresting him. Fucking UK

Police looking to improve their statistics while justice takes a back seat.

I don't understand what the 78 year old home owner did wrong.

UK laws for this are so fucked up. I would get it if the 78yr old chased him into the street to kill him. But he was literally in his own home and the assailants armed!! And the report says the poor old man is in custody!!!!!!!!!

I don't know what vexes me more, the fact that this man was arrested or the shit I just had to endure trying to read about it on that fucking link. Daily fucking Mail...

lmao @ letting an old fart kill you. He deserved to die if he couldn't defend himself.

In the UK, they expect you to hide in fear and call the police after the fact, instead of protecting your property.

He did nothing wrong. It's liberal politicians that are wrong here. Giving people rights and protection when they break into your home is so unfathomably stupid that most of us cannot even comprehend it. Yet for some reason, many countries have them.

Perfect example of precisely why the colonists revolted. Fuck Georges III and his British Empire bullshit with their absolutely flagrant disregard for individual liberty

He would likely be charged in Canada under the same circumstances.

We have no right to defend property here with force. None. You do have a right to defend yourself but only if fleeing is not an option and you are at imminent risk. If the police investigate and see you had an ability to flee instead of engaging with the intruder in your home you will be charged with assault or worse if you harm him. You must always choose to flee if that is an option.

I'd imagine it's the same for all Royal subjects

Arrested doesn't mean charged of course, I'm guessing its very unlikely that happens going from the circumstances that have come out so far.

That is such bullshit. You enter a home violently your life is as good as forfeit.

That's not right and I'm serious.

He was at home, in bed with his wife. He protected his family and his property. like @Lastofthemohican said, it would be wrong if he chased the guy off his property and did him in, but he was inside his home. Funk dat noise. He had a moral obligation to defend his wife and property.

we have endless stories like this.

We have seen many people charged defending their homes from invaders particularly since our gun laws require storage of guns and ammo in separate locked locations.

So the first thing the police tend to do is determine how long it would take you to retrieve both your gun and ammo and see if you could not have fled in the same amount of time. if they think you had time to flee you will be charged.

Hamilton man (age 65) charged in shooting defending home: son
A 65-year-old east end man who faces assault and gun charges after allegedly shooting a would-be home invader was just trying to defend his family, his son says.

Canadian Man Charged with Attempted Murder After Wrestling Away Gun, Shooting Suspect

A man in Halifax, Nova Scotia, faces numerous charges—including attempted murder—after wrestling a gun away from a home invasion suspect and shooting him with it.

'I'm glad he shot him': Newfoundland man up on murder charges for shooting home invader

In a case that has spurred the ire of self-defenders across Canada, Gilbert Budgell is facing second degree murder charges for fatally shooting the suspected home invader

Late at night last Saturday, two men entered a small home in the 3,000-person town of Botwood, N.L.

One would flee. The other would be fatally shot.

And Gilbert Budgell, the 53-year-old man whose home they were allegedly invading, is now in police custody facing the unusually severe charge of second-degree murder.

Man who confronted intruder charged

A man escorting his girlfriend to her home Sunday night discovered signs of entry to her house and, fearing for the woman’s mother sleeping inside, searched for intruders. A man was found hiding, Toronto police said. An ensuing struggle left the intruder bleeding from stab wounds.

As frightening as the incident was, it is the charging of the boyfriend with aggravated assault, punishable by 14 years in prison, that makes the case stand out in a clutter of urban crime.

Man faces jail after protecting home from masked attackers

The incident began six years of trouble for Mr. Thomson that culminated early one Sunday morning last August when the 53-year-old former mobile-crane operator woke up to the sound of three masked men firebombing his Port Colborne, Ont., home.

...

So Mr. Thomson, a former firearms instructor, grabbed one of his Smith & Wesson revolvers from his safe, loaded it and headed outside dressed in only his underwear.

“He exited his house and fired his revolver two, maybe three times, we’re not sure. Then these firebombing culprits, they ran off,” said his lawyer, Edward Burlew.

His surveillance cameras caught the attackers lobbing at least six Molotov cocktails at his house and bombing his doghouse, singeing one of his Siberian Huskies. But when Mr. Thomson handed the video footage to Niagara Regional Police, he found himself charged with careless use of a firearm.

The local Crown attorney’s office later laid a charge of pointing a firearm, along with two counts of careless storage of a firearm. The Crown has recommended Mr. Thomson go to jail, his lawyer said.

I hope hes charged with a hate crime. Just because it's his home doesn't mean those things belong to him.

I feel like there has to be more to be story. The article is referencing another case where a homeowner was sentenced for killing intruders. Seems like the idea is if you continue attacking them when it isn't necessary then you could be charged. I guess if he stabbed him like 87 times he could be charged. So I dunno. On its face it seems like an open and shut case of self defense.
