At least seven people have been killed and several more injured after a shooting in the northern German city of Hamburg, German media have reported, citing police and emergency services.

Police said the gunman was believed to be among the dead. “We have no indications of a perpetrator on the run,” a spokesman said.

Hamburg police tweeted earlier on Thursday evening that a major police operation was underway in the GrossBorstel district of the city, adding that they were urgently investigating the background, but gave no further details.

“According to initial findings, shots were fired in a church on Deelbögestrasse in the GrossBorstel district,” police said. “Several people were seriously injured, some fatally. We are on site with a large contingent of officers.”

Bild newspaper said seven people had died and 25 were injured – eight of them seriously – in the shooting, which it said happened in a Jehovah’s Witness centre soon after 9pm.

Can't remember the last time JWs made the news.
Although that's a bit surprising with the extent of some of their "congregational discipline", excommunication and the impact on families.

That's awful, RIP.

With the shooter dead I wonder if we'll find out what his motive was.

Laughing @ the JW’s sure but this?!

Just tragic, I hope the wounded recover...tough one since they can’t have blood transfusions.

Wickedness surrounds the world, I suppose.

The dead are 4 men, 2 women and the unborn child of a pregnan woman who survived.

The killer was Phillip F, 35.

He had had a gun license since 2006 and owned an H&K P30.

Phillip killed himself as police closed in.

He was a former Jehovah's Witness who left the community 18 months ago on bad terms. Some articles say voluntarily, some say not.

Police received an anonymous letter in January saying that Phillip was mentally ill and should have his gun taken away. They visited him in February and once again but decided that he could keep it.

The JWs are usually pretty shitty to ex-members. Even when it's family, they'll still be shunned. Whether it's because they just left or because they were excommunicated for accepting a blood transfusion etc.

Edit: Not that I'm in any way excusing this dud unit's actions, but when I read it was JWs that was the first scenario that came to mind.

The killer was Phillip Fusz, a freelance business consultant.

The people shot dead were German nationals, 4 men and 2 women aged 33 - 60, as well as the unborn baby, whose mother survived.

6 of the injured are German citizens, 1 Ukrainian and 1 Ugandan.

Fusz got his marksman's permit and H&K P30 in December. This is presumably separate from his gun license, which he got in 2006.

Fusz first fired 10 shots at a woman in a car outside the Kingdom Hall but she escaped with light injuries. He then entered the hall and fired 135 rounds. He was wearing a backpack containing 20 full magazines and had another 2 full magazines in his pockets.

Fusz was born and grew up in southern Germany in a strict evangelical household.

He studied at a technical college before an apprenticeship at a 'leading private bank'. He lists studies in business administration, a BA (hons) and a science master’s among his academic achievements.

His minimum consultancy fee was €250 plus 19% VAT.

He self-published a book called 'The Truth About God, Jesus Christ and Satan: A New Reflected View of Epochal Dimensions' in January. It was for sale on Amazon.

The police have ruled out terrorism as a motive.

Have to be a special kind of prick to kill at a place of worship.

That said, he could have been twisted by leaving the community.

Either way fucked up all around

Need some investigating on whoever assessed him and let him keep his gun in Jan/Feb
