Extra-judicial punishment shouldn't be promoted and encouraged in a civilized society. The guy is clearly scum, but the State is the entity to administer punishment and justice, not other inmates.

Except sometimes they are (not referring to rape, although those who participated in the Rape of Berlin, and others of like mind, would likely include it as a just punishment in certain instances). What I was saying with my post, was that as long as our justice system remains corruptible, we cannot expect to be free of this sort of behavior in our prisons and jails (nor should we act as though we are above it).

As to what you're asking me now, I can't imagine an instance in which rape wouldn't be an absolutely horrible thing to do (which is why I excluded it in my edit to clarify). However, in respect to being a good or bad deed, in this world, killing or throwing someone a beating seem to me to be flexible concepts.
