Charles Oliveira defends his title against Justin Gaethje next. If Justin can stuff the takedowns and grapple attempts, I think he can handily beat Charles on the feet

Islam probably has the strength and grappling to take both Charles and Oliveira down, but Oliveira has the best subs in UFC history. It might not even be wise too take him to the ground, even though that’s Islams bread and butter. Unrelated note - Islam is growing on me a lot, especially if he accepts this fight at 170 with RDA, that’s the stuff we want to see.

So the way I see it we have Charles who beats Islam, Islam beating Justin, and Justin beating Charles

It looks like you see a Rock, paper, paper situation to me.

So you're saying Islam can take Charles and Oliveira but can he take Do Bronx?

I think Islam and Justin both beat Charles, even though I probably like Oliveira the most out of the three. Gaethje stuffs the takedowns and wins the striking exchange by being 100x more durable. Charles finishes Islam standing before he does on the mat imo. So Islam likely secures takedowns and wins a decision by playing it safe with pressure/top control while avoiding sub attempts. Charles has been proving people wrong a lot lately and maybe I'm just another casualty. But Gaethje vs Islam is the fight I'd most like to see.

I love this weight class. So many good fighters and interesting matchups

If anything, I'd say that Gaethje is a more difficult fight for Islam because there's a chance he could catch Islam with something big. Khabib's durability is what allowed him to beat Gaethje; he ate several heavy punches and a number of damaging leg kicks. So the question is whether Islam will be durable enough to take the necessary shots to eventually get the takedown.

It's highly unlikely that Oliveira would submit Islam. Islam has a very high-level submission grappler. Guys at that level very rarely get submitted in MMA, especially from top position. At best, I'd say Oliveira's submission game could create scrambles and provide opportunities to stand back up. But sub Islam? I wouldn't bank on it, not unless Islam was rocked or gassed first.

As Josh Thompson said, Oliveira would actually have a better shot at subbing Khabib, who did leave his neck exposed at times. But Islam's submission game is too tight.

I don’t think Islam can take Justin’s punches. If Justin lands like he did on Khabib he wins that one IMO.

TBH I see Justin more likely to beat Islam than charles. That KO loss Islam has is a bit worrying if power connects, currently his winning so easily his taking minimal damage in the process.
