- Fernand Lopez backs Ciryl's move to go for the leg lock, based on the fact that he wasn't sure that the referees would give Ciryl the first round. They would have followed up in GnP if that was the case.
- He thought that Francis was going to go to wrestling sooner in the fight. He was impressed by Francis abilities to hold and control Ciryl in wrestling the last two rounds though.
- They used specific language regarding corner instruction so that Francis could not understand.
- They focused on strikes and kicks to avoid to get too close and minimized the risks to get ko.
- He already found 2 HW sparring partners to train Ciryl in wrestling.

Thats the one mistake, if only Fernand knew that the first round was in the pocket...they will come back stronger :)

It wasn't in the pocket. 1 judge had it for Francis. Personally i gave it to Ciryl but the 1st was close. Francis landed some excellent body shots and maintained octagon controll.

Imagine watching it from the corner where Fernand was sitting. No way for him to know.

Wasn't a leg lock, he got swept.

You always struck me as the Kevin Iole type who never trained or played any sports and thanks for demonstrating it once again.

Grapplers on top often give up position to go for leg locks which requires holding onto their opponents leg with both arms making it impossible to post with the hands to maintain top position which results in ending up on bottom. You're a black belt in couch with fritos lol

Except Ngannou is the one who had arm control for the sweep, not Gane had his arms free for the leg lock.

Gane got swept.

Gane was not credited with a submission attempt for this. Less than 10 seconds after this sweep occurred Gane outmuscled Francis to get to his knees and dropped back for a heel hook.

Gane was credited with 2 submission attempts for the 2 heel hooks he attempted after this occurred because both threatened to end the fight.

Did you miss the two heel hook attempts that occurred after this or just being intellectually dishonest?

Gane got swept.
Gane also starts flinching and covering up (even though nothing is coming), totally giving up any control he had on that heel hook.

(He kind of gets it back later in the sequence, but Ngannou's leg is already almost out).

Sounds like his corner knew Gane's wrestling was suspect but they thought Francis was never going to catch on

Looking at this a 4 dozen times now as of writing this, it tough to call. I see 100% what you mean that it's sweep, especially with the arm control. But it also looks like Gane is setting up a leg lock, since he's cradling Ngannou's leg before he steps up.

Hard to say. Very possible he was trying to pass to half guard and botched it, since Ngannou had the arm control. Could also be Gane felt like he was going to lose position anyway feeling Ngannou's strength. Maybe all of the above.

Except Fernand says they'd have otherwise ground and pounded instead of the leg lock if they knew the scoring:

How does Gane GNP from his back? He has to have been on top in the moment Fernand is talking about, which is the gif in question as that's the only time Gane was on top.

They're trying to pretend, as the commentary also thought had happened, that Gane dropped for a sub and got reversed instead of Ngannou swept Gane.

Well Ngannou had arm control, opened up his guard on specifically that side, and then immediately swept the leg when Gane posted for the now open guard.

I can't at all say it's a sub attempt when Gane never even had the control for it, and Ngannou had clearly baited the position. Maybe he was going for half guard, but that's still falling into Ngannou's moves where he'd tried to make that side appear weak despite having the arm control still.

Ngannou set up a sweep and Gane (literally) stepped right into it.

Why in the world would you attempt a leg lock with your posted arm captured with an overhook?

He got swept, even if you think he's thinking about a leg lock.

Ngannou is a absolutely terrible wrestler and grappler by world title fight standards. He is a 6 month white belt. He's dogshit. Thats just how more dogshit Gane is at grappling.

I remember when Gane got that position and starting losing it, I could hear by old BJJ coach yelling at me when I made those mistakes "ATTACK THE HEAD! ATTACK THE HEAD!"

Gane has a lot to learn no doubt, but I feel fatigue played a factor in that as well. I can't say he's THAT bad if he was able to grapple his way back up from having a beast like Ngannou on him. You do that a handful of times, like he did in R3 and R4, it'll wear you out.

Gane got swept.

Nah you just never trained in your life and don't understand the mechanics of leg locks. If you notice Gane bites down first with his left knee to go for the reap before there was a sweep attempt. Cheers.

Mate, you literally tried to say Gane had Ngannou's leg isolated with both arms when Ngannou had arm control on Gane.

Please stop embarrassing yourself. Gane got swept, it happens.

Yea I'm embarrassed even though you're the one who can't even see that Gane bites down for the reap first. Go take a Gracie instructional couch boy.
