When a fighter doesn’t take a replacement fight, who eats the costs?

Honestly I am upset that Phil Hawes didnt take the replacement fight as he was the only fighter on the card i wanted to see fight. It got me thinking, who pays the flight/hotel costs of Phil Hawes coaches? Does the UFC compensate Phil for the opponent dropout? Or does Phil get nothing for declining to fight and then tell his coaches they arent getting paid anymore? Does phil then cover airfare and hotel/food for the coaches?

Fighters are paid to show up/make weight, to fight and to win. If you only show up and make weight then you only get paid that portion. You don't get fight money and obviously no win bonus. The fighters are basically independent contractors and are responsible for their own "business".

It's probably all in their contracts. You'd probably need to hit up Dana or Phil Hawes and ask them for the correct answer.

Training for Winn must be very different than training for anybody else in the division... The dude is a total manlet and all he can do is wrestle.

I really can't blame Hawes for not taking the opponent change, the only person who'd be close in style to Winn is Kyle Maynard

My guess is the UFC pays all the travel expenses that they normally would, after all, the coaches are already in Vegas. Tickets have been paid for and used. It's not their fault the opponent withdrew. And I think the travel reimbursements are a very very small part of the UFC's budget but I'm not sure how much they typically cover.

If I had to guess, Hawes is probably hoping to reschedule the Winn fight in the near future. Winn withdrew for a non-covid, non-weight cut-related illness.

Don't think he gets paid for anything

Pretty sure Ed Herman was super pissed when his opponent pulled out last minute a few months ago and said he wasn't getting paid (if I remember correctly)

Edit: found a quote

“2020’s been pretty f-cked, man,” Herman said. “I’ve had three full fight camps, and I haven’t fought yet. I fight Saturday, great, that’s one fight. But I had three full fight camps with not making any money and not getting to fight. I’m in the best shape of my life almost, I feel like, so that’s cool. But at the same time, nobody likes working half a year and not getting paid. So it’s been a little rough financially in that sense.”

I guess it depends when the fight cancelled. There will be a clause at which point UFC can cancel and reschedule at no cost, and a point where they have to pay the show money. If you get to fight week you are getting paid, but I would assume Yan v Sterling for example is a reschedule with no financial penalty.

How late did his opponent pull out?

OP is not asking about fighter pay, they're asking about like the free travel the UFC provides to the fighter and their coach to get to the actual fight.

I assume the UFC still covers that but that's consistent with Ed Herman complaining about not getting paid.

It's up to the fighter and the coach to figure that out. I'd guess coaches don't ask to be paid if their fighter doesn't have a fight. The fighter loses camp costs (like sparring partners, nutritionist) from his own pocket, usually from what he made in the last fight.

So the coaches fly/drive out to vegas on wednesday and then back home saturday? 4 days of their time plus whatever they put into training camp for 0 dollars? Sounds like a shit deal

It is, part of the game. Fighters often pay coaches after the fight. UFC can pay the flight costs, but I'm not sure if they do it for everyone. The bond between the coach and the pupil is often strong, so they understand these things can happen.

The coach is usually part of a gym or even owns one. Has a steady income. While the fighter maybe teaches classes, like for kids and amateurs, a smaller income. Or doesn't teach and then gains nothing from the trip. Just camp expenses, on the minus.
