Is it kinda weird that the ESPN guys all showed up to the big event?

Where were they before? When Masvidal was fighting etc. Or were they always there and I just didnt pay attention. Seems like this event ESPN was all over it. Steven A smith teddy, kellerman everyone. Like when Connor comes out. They come out. It's weird.

ESPN has given MMA a lot more attention, but it still seems to me that the sport takes a backseat to the stick and ball sports of the world unless there are high profile names (not necessarily super accomplished fighters) that the 45-60 year old dude watching their programs recognizes. I mean, even though they're broadcasting the event, ESPN doesn't seem all too much different to me than the celebrities that show up to events when a big name is competing but are nowhere to be seen at Fight Night events or non-UFC regional shows (which there is nothing wrong with imo).

Idk, I'd prefer if they didn't. I can't stand watching these guys that treated MMA like a circus sideshow trying to give analysis of a sport they clearly don't understand.

It is pretty bizarre haha I'm always just kinda cheering on these guys that obviously don't know MMA and hoping they don't overreach with their minimal knowledge to sound smart haha

give it another 30 years or so.

MMA as we know it began in the 90's which means we are barely 30 years into it.

It's a pretty big pay per view. I think it would be weird if they added obligations to thier plate to cover non big event ppv. Definitely a thread worthy question to ask.

Is it weird that the network sent their biggest names to the biggest event in sports on Saturday night, when that event was broadcast by that very network?

This is a tough one.

It’s weird they pick and choose which ones they consider “coverage worthy” yet we hear nothing but crickets from them when we had a double title fight ppv, with Izzy vs the Italian dude, Vettori I’d say ufc 263 was bigger, yet when Connor fights they all come out like casual fans

Yeah. But they sound like uneducated idiots. It’s bad. Better not to send them.
Normally I agree. But SAS was pretty solid all week. Stayed in his lane. Gave the best interview to Conor all week. Was the only one that called Conor out for his disgusting comments after, then the rest of the squad all chimed in with "yea yea what he said."

And Kellerman's analysis post fight was spot on. I think it actually hurt ESPN, because he just put cold water on the remaining few huggers clinging to 2016. DC and Rogan were far more biased and more insufferable IMHO

It’s so annoying.
They need to stick to the sports they know.
Leave the MMA community alone with actual people who know about the sport (minus Joe Rogan)

No I hear you. But a Conor fight on ESPN is like the super bowl for them. If it’s garnering attention outside of the typical fan base, then they’re going to bust out the big names.

It does feel like ESPN could give more of a push to a few other guys now that you mention it.

Yes! Now you’re seeing it my way. ESPN should treat all ppvs like a big event. Ufc 263 was bigger IMO. Maybe we will see espn cover more since the pandemic restrictions have been lifted. And the more they watch the more educated they will become.
