After the fight with Fedor his opponents would often lose their next fight because they were emotionally and mentally burned out. They were in best shape of their life, gave all that they had, and saw that it wasn't enough, Fedor was just that much better than them. At that moment they realized that no matter what they do, they will never be the best in the world, it showed them their limitations when compered to the best.

On the other hand, after JJ fight his opponents would often lose because they were overconfident. They saw that they can compete (even beat) the best LHW, and they thought that they will have no problem with anyone else, and all they thought about was rematch with JJ somewhere down the road. They overlooked their opponent, because he had so much less reputation when compered to JJ (who they almost beat).

Examples for Fedor are :
Andrei Arlovski (lost to Bret Rogers, never looked the same after Fedor).
Tim Sylvia (lost to Ray Mercer, never the same after Fedor).
Brett Rogers (never the same).
Big Nog (never the same).
Mirko Filipovic (never the same).

Examples for JJ are :
Gustafson (won against Manuwa, but right after that lost to Rumble, to me it was clear underestimation of Rumbles' skills and capabilities).
Ovince St. Preux (right after got KOed by Manuwa).
Thiago Santos (subbed by Teixeira).
Dominick Reyes (koed by Jan).

Conclusion : when prime Fedor beat you, there was no reason for feeling overconfident in your abilities after the match.

I agree with your overall assessment, but cro cop example isn't applicable. He won the owgp after the fight, the peak achievement of his career.

Then Jon Jones would lose to his safe driving exam
