according to Sherdog, Mutante beat Saraffian 30-28 in one scorecard - I could be mistaking the fight, but I read that there was a 30-28 on Fight Night 32;

that means that there was a round scored a draw right? I thought that was a no-no for MMA judges.

how does a judge go out on his own and change the game like that?

more interesting, there was an event recently - I won't recall which one - when there were more 10-8 rounds than almost all the other events combined - there was a sherdog article pointing it out - so it surely looked like there was an orientation towards doing that.

how is one event scored differently from all the other ones?

IMO those two "trends" would be amazing for MMA - instead of judges having to make up a winner for each round regardless of how close it was/ judges having to see a near death in the cage to score a 10-8.

Yeah, I found that weird too.

At first I thought it was an error

Completely agreed. We NEED half points, or more 10-8s, 10-7s, and 10-10s to start scoring fights correctly.

Just adding more 10-10s and 10-8s would probably lead to more draws which sucks for the fighters and the fans, so I think half points would be a better option

not a no-no. just rare. he didn't change the game at all; he just used something that has evolved (right or wrong) into being used only rarely.

or, it was a math error, which amazingly enough seems to happen about as often as a 10-10 lol

1/2 point scoring was investigated and determined (at least by one committee) to be more harmful than beneficial.

just an fyi. i agree that something should be done btw. though sometimes i don't.

whats the point of it being out of 10 if we only ever use the first 2 numbers. why not make it out of 3 or use more of the 10 points

American sports culture has a tradition of aversion to draws, but I don't think that is fair, if a fight was close enough to be a draw, so be it.

10-10 rounds are allowed but discouraged by wording.
there should be a lot more 10-10 rounds and more 10-8s.

agreed

there also needs to be some flexibility in giving rounds more or less weight.

Fighter A barely edging out two close rounds that are almost draws, then get totally destroyed in the third just short of 10-8 and close to being finished by Fighter B when the bell saves him would still mean he won...it doesn't make sense. Not everything can be measured in numbers.

10-10 rounds are 100% legal. How people still don't know this is beyond me. No one likes draws though, so they are rarely used.

People are still confused by this? 10-10 rounds are fine, if underutilized.

If there ever was a match where we need a 10-8, it should have been Nurmagomedov—Trujillo.
Unfortunately, all three judges scored it 10-27.

How would you make that work with point deductions due to fouls?
