24 too late to get good at judo at a reasonable age?

your already questioning yourself, not a good start. Just goto practice/train as much as possible then decide how much time u need to dedicate. Also make sure you have fun and enjoy it !!

^^ HAHA That would make you ancient. You should just retire I suppose. :icon_lol:

The older you get, the more likely it is that you will be harrassed by people (generally bums, thugs) for shit like money or cigarettes. I'm sure you've heard of stories of elderle people getting beat up by thieves because they seem like an easy target. Starting at 24 is not too late at all.
This is a myth. Here in the UK (and I doubt its different anywhere else) most violence is committed by males aged 16 to 25 (or maybe 24) against other males of similar age. The reason you hear about the elderly more often is because it is 1) more shocking and 2) the consequences are often more serious (a 70 year old could be killed by a beating that a 17 year old could shrug off). These two factors conspire to attract the attention of the media, and rightly so. Hence you hear about it.

i didnt think i shoulda said that... i havent practiced judo so i cant state something like that. im being biased i guess because of my build and background. i stand corrected. ive been in my fair share of fights and clinching and trying to throw someone is the last thing in my mind.

That is actually a very mature and honest response. You had your opinion and owned up to it being possibly flawed, am I still on sherdog or what? :icon_chee

You are entitled to your thoughts/opinions of course, but in my opinion Judo is one of the best martial arts for self defense. I have a heavy striking background (Karate/Muay Thai), and have only trained Judo for a little over 2 years, but I wouldn't hesitate to use it if the situation presented itself. The best bet is to be well-rounded, which is exactly why I started Judo in the first place.

As for TS, 24 is not even remotely close to being too old! Like others have said, you'll probably never make the national team or participate in the Olympics, but you have ample time to get proficient at it. I started 2 years removed from 30, and I'm doing just fine! One of the guys at my club started Judo when he was in his 40's, he is 50 + now and going for his black belt. He is in great physical condition, strong as an ox, and would have no trouble taking out your average meathead or thug.

Here's what you do.

Go to a judo club. Do randori with a guy who is the same size and age as you and has been training between 6 months and a year.

Let us know how it goes.

Even a little experience and training goes a long way against your average untrained person on the street.

PS I am 36 and just started judo (admittedly, I'm a BJJ purple belt - but still, it's never too late.)

Can it be done at this age? Would like some advice.

Only way to find out is to try!

I started BJJ at 24 and Judo at 32 for reference. My colleague recently took up Judo again in his 40s. I would think the average age at the club is way older than 24 as well.

Started at 27, and I would have been thrilled to start at 24. Go for it. You'll be surprised how far you'll come in just year vs a non-grapplers, and then start to realize how much better you can be.

your never too old, im 28, i started BJJ 7 months ago with no experience of martial arts and i was in pretty bad shape, and now my fitness is 1000 times better than it was and still improving.

Im about to start judo tonight, which i cant wait, im fully aware im going to be the old noob but if the judo club is anything like my BJJ place then it wont matter to anyone

like you said yourself you wont be going to the olympics but youll be fitter and better than anyone else you know who thinks theyre too old to train at 24 and if you find a good club the only limit is yourself, you'll get out what you put into your training.

as someone else said, go roll/spar with someone whos been doing judo for 6 months and see how you get on, your ass will get handed to you.

you can do it for sure, if you're in good health with no pre-existing injuries. It's really really easy to get hurt in Judo, and missed training is what kills progress, especially early. Just don't miss class and you'll be fine. 24 isn't that old.

Pack it in buddy and call the bus to get you. At 24 it is time to slow down and pace yourself. I freaking wish I was 24 again. I am 45 and still banging.

You prob won't make the Olympics but you will have a good time.

This is honestly the first thing that came to my mind. Not to discourage him, but a black belt at my gym once told me that if you're learning judo for self-defense then you've missed the point. You'll get far more beat up taking falls & doing randori/competition that the off chance of street fight isn't really worth it. Do it because its fun and you love the art, and defending yourself is just a byproduct.

Of course the best self-defense is to avoid conflict altogether.

The fact that anybody, anybody at all, is telling you that starting at 24 years old is even remotely too late would be laughable if it weren't such damaging advice. Many men aren't even finished growing by 24. Myself included.

Not only will you become more than proficient for the purpose of self-defense, but you could get very good even by local competition standards. That of course, depends on your dedication and intensity.

I would recommend cross-training in BJJ if your main purpose is self-defense, but only because Judo does have a steeper learning curve. Both are great.

Put it this way. If you trained 3-4 times a week, every week, along with keeping in shape; by this time next year, you'll be a whole different man and wouldn't sweat the kinds of altercations like the one you mentioned.

Yes, do it. It will change your life.

No you are ready for the senior citizen home and a life of arthritis and flatulence. All kidding aside you are far from being to old, but make sure you get into it for the right reasons and not just to impress people.

No, definitely not. I've been doing Judo for 3 years or so and I've been injured for bits of it and I'm fighting for my black belt in June. Stick at it and put the effort in

Why do you care? It is not like you have too much better things to do anyway.

Shut up and train
