The point is not that homicide is fine or something; it's that the overall crime rate in the U.S. appears normal for a developed country--the murder problem (and, again, no one is saying it is not a problem) is a result of the very high gun ownership rates, which is a different issue and a much harder one to deal with that if we'd just been uniformly poor at reducing crime.

Even if the homicide rate were an outlier (I still haven't found a convincing analysis to demonstrate that), that doesn't really address why your clearance rate for homicide is so low. How could your policing be effectively keeping the crime rate in check when only just over half of the most serious crimes result in prosecution? Clearance rates for property crimes or assault really aren't any indicator, because both reporting and clearance are typically low for those internationally, but low clearance rates for homicide typically means systemic failure. Your rates have dropped dramatically from a more reasonable 90% in the 60s to just over 50%.
The discussion here has been about the pandemic and post pandemic increase in crime, as a driving factor for political change, but actually that was only really reflected in the homicide rate. Other reported crimes (including other violent crimes) decreased.

Well sure, the US has never exactly promoted egalitarianism, and I don't think there's anywhere on earth where massive disparities in wealth and the capacity for social participation (social mobility etc) in close geographic proximity aren't correlated with high rates of crime, and violent crime in particular.

Longer prison sentences are the biggest contributor to the high prison population, and I agree that that is bad and should be fixed. Higher rates of success for the cops do more to reduce crime that harsher sentencing for people who do get caught.

I voted for lake in person in maricopa county. My ballot was placed in a box. Turn out was insane all day at the three centers near my home. I can say with full confidence if kari lake does not win many people will never vote again. Katie hobbs didnt even campaign and ran the election in 2020, ive never met a person in real life who supports her. If she wins im done with voting and people can come get me when its time for revolution.

the only reason why kari lake even caught up is because of the surge of in-person votes. but now its all starting to fall away from her, and now its up to maricopa county, tucson, and flagstaff to determine the outcome of this race too. we all know what happened when the mail in votes first started to be counted. kari lake was down over 18%. now almost all thats left is the mail in votes in those denser more urban areas where the bulk of the citizens live, and they are all predominantly blue.

its basically the same story with her as it is with the senate, the secretary of state, and the attorney general's elections too. the republicans almost caught up when the in person voting came in and but basically all thats left to look at is maricopa, pima, and cocinio county. there's about 9000 votes left in apache county too, and democrats are killing it in all races over there too, but the rest of the votes are insignificant

its really not looking at all in her favor, as well as for the other 3 republicans in their respective elections and at this point i've almost seen enough in all of these races. the republicans gained one extra house seat in arizona, but right now its almost certain that they will lose everything else. they are no doubt going to call the senate for mark kelly later on in the day, and then theyll call the elections for hobbs and the other 2 democrats shortly afterwards once a dump from maricopa county comes in. right now the republicans have a chance on paper and thats why the races havent yet been called, but looking at where the rest of the votes are coming from, theres just no way theyre going to catch up. i could be wrong, but i' just dont see the numbers there for kari lake and the rest of the republicans.

the story in nevada right now is much more difficult for the democrats than in arizona. its almost guaranteed for the democrats in arizona. in nevada they are praying that the rest of the mail in ballots in vegas and reno will be enough to fend off whats going on virtually everywhere else in the state.
