CHARLOTTE -- Hillary Clinton will formally claim the endorsement Monday of retired Marine Gen. John R. Allen, the latest move by her campaign intended to bolster the military and national security credentials of the presumptive Democratic nominee.

Allen plans to announce his backing of Clinton, the former secretary of state, prior to a speech she is scheduled to give here at a national convention of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, according to a campaign aide.

Allen is a retired four-star general who served as commander of the International Security Assistance Force overseeing NATO troops in Afghanistan and as deputy commander of U.S. Central Command.
