Federer v Sampras would have been a hell of a match.

how do modern players match up against the greats?

One thing is 90's men's tennis being stacked compared to the older gen and this one, so it was harder to win, which makes Sampras & Agassi special.

Agassi in particular had a serve counter skill that no one has matched thus far, while Sampras had the steel nerves of Federer but was more of a classic hard court player with a couple of specializations than an all-rounder like Fed & Djoko.

Nadal would've killed them all on clay, his motor is unbelievable. Chang comes close to that, but he didn't hit as hard and didn't have the uber spin Nadal has. Muster vs Nadal is among the best clay match-ups peak for peak. Wood rackets also make the older gen tougher to gauge.
