I've only rolled nogi before and I've read time and time again about the differences between nogi and Gi BJJ and honestly had a bias towards nogi. Yesterday was the first time I joined a Gi class and honestly i find it so much tougher. I am now converted - Gi is the shit. Every hater or nay sayer out there try rolling in the Gi and you'll witness the truth
Your Opinion has merit but NOGI is vastly superior in everyway.
The simple reason is that absolutely every technique that you can utilize in NOGI can be used in the GI. many of GI's setups and attacks can not be utilized in nogi.
You'll hear defenders of GI BJJ state "I've never fought a guy that was naked or not wearing clothes derp" well try and put the same grip forces on the typical American male uniform of jeans or shorts and a t shirt and see how long before you unclothed said attacker.
Pulling guard in the gi is a terrible idea in a street fight. NOGI guys are typically former wrestlers who intrinsically know that you want to be on top.
I've recently started rolling in the gi because I moved to a new city and there were no MMA schools or NOGI only options available.
I have to use far more force to break the grips of inferior grapplers that are clinging to my gi, my belt, my pants (thank god I don't have long hair) for dear life.
Now here's the kicker 6 months into this gi school and I have
NEVER grabbed anyone's Gi during live rolling.(my red blooded American male ego won't allow me to consciously grab a dudes pants) Which seems to aggravate the shit out of the higher belts.
I'm tapping guys easy with NOGI techniques while learning gi attacks during drilling and class. Don't abandon NOGI bro getting a takedown and being able to move like a wrestler with advanced submission defense and offense is the present and future of submission grappling.
That's whats making guys like Chris Weidman so dangerous. And even BJJ masters like demain Maia learn basic wrestling.
