I was like 4 years old in 1989, just barely old enough to remember this class of movies that came out that year. Maybe it was because I was so young and these were like the first movies I ever really saw but so many movies from this year are like permanently burned into my brain and bring back so much nostalgia. A lot of movies that came out in 1989 I probably watched on VHS with my parents in 1990, or on cable TV in 1991-1992. I do remember going to see Ghostbusters II in theaters and my parents rented so many movies back then, and I would always get to watch them with them no matter if they were rated R or not.

Just looking at what came out that year on Wikipedia and it was a pretty stellar year for movies, a very interesting year for movies at the very least.

The Abyss
Honey I Shrunk The Kids
Ghostbusters 2
Field Of Dreams
Major League
Dead Calm
Lean On Me
The Burbs
Back to the Future 2
See No Evil, Hear No Evil
Turner and Hooch
Black Rain

In another thread recently I said that 1991 was the GOAT year for action movies but after looking closer at 1989 I think it could surpass it:

American Ninja 3
Cyborg
Kickboxer
Red Scorpion
Road House
No Holds Barred
Batman
Lethal Weapon 2
Lock Up
The Punisher
Best Of The Best
Tango & Cash
Karate Kid 3

Pretty solid year for horror movies too with Jason Takes Manhattan, Shocker, Puppett Master, Pet Semetary, then you had the guilty pleasures I've always loved like Weekend At Bernies, The Wizard, and Harlem Nights. Then you got movies like Sex Lies and Videotape and Look Who's Talking which were a big deal back then. Sea of Love solid Pacino movie with John Goodman(and brief cameo by Sam Jackson). Also I remember watching All Dogs Go To Heaven and Little Mermaid in kindergarten.

Is it just me and the fact that I was in awe with these larger than life stories and characters as a young child or was 1989 a really excellent standout year with a bunch of movies that had a really unique charm about them?

Ill never forget watching the Burton Batman in the theatre.....epic.

Solid but not spectacular year by any means, imo.

I was a junior/senior in high school. I took dates or went with friends to most of those. It’s funny how good my memory is:

Dead Calm I was on a double date and we had to sit in the front row. Totally under the screen.
Batman me and my girl saw ata drive in, we brought Chinese food.
Roadhouse we saw in an old theater with balcony seats. We snuck a bottle of soco in.
The Abyss I saw with 20 people from school. I took a girl that wasn’t wearing a stone washed mini skirt and a Guns n Roses T shirt lol.

Awesome year for movies. Batman and Indie 3 are awesome. Also loved Abyss, Honey I shrunk the kids, and Ghostbusters 2. And Back to the Future part 2 is an all time favourite.

I watched turner and hooch in the theater. One of those movies I forgot existed till reading it here. Actually I saw like half of those in the theater.

Shit, for some reason I thought Major League came out a couple years later in the 90s. I definitely think it was the best movie in that list.

Vampire’s Kiss was released in 1989. that alone makes 1989 one of the GOAT years for film.

You know what you should do, go back through the years and poll the forum in the best movie from each year, then poll the winners to pick a best of from each decade.

Some years stated as years of movies release are wrong.. I don't know why they do it, but they do. At least the years cable companies havevaa movie release years are wrong sometimes, I've noticed.

They at one point had American psycho as a 2001 movie.. They changed it to 2000, but I'm fairly certain it was 98 or 99.

89 and 84 were one of the greatest years for movies

TS I questioned your list because you missed one rather easy choice. Refer to the spoiler tag below.

Then I did see you mention Black Rain, you recovered your own initial fumble nicely.

I watched Lock Up either last weekend or weekend before last, great bro movie for sure, epic football game and the "best buds working on a muscle car together" montage had me laughing pretty hard, the close up on Sly's triceps while he's working the ratchet and the cheesy 80's song just fucking glorious.
