1962 Alcatraz escape

Mythbuster did an experiment few years ago, and they made it. If the conditions of the weather & water were normal, it was possible.

They never found the bodies either, who knows. But I'd like to think that they made it. Rumor was that someone from inside the jail had arranged a boat for them & they fled to either mexico or Brazil.

Shark Food

Very unlikely.

The whole thing about Alcatraz being infested with dangerous sharks is a myth the guards would tell the inmates to make them think twice about trying to swim off the island. The real danger was temperature of the water and the strong current pushing you out to sea. The main species of sharks that hangout there are leopard sharks and hound sharks, both are pretty small and don't attack humans. Thousands of people swim from Alcatraz every year during triathlons and shit like that, do you really think they'd let people swim in an area that's apparently infested with great whites or something like that?

If a great white is spotted in that area, it's likely just passing through to get to a spot where they normally feed. White sharks have a very strict diet and have a few specific spots they frequent for food, Alcatraz is not one of those places. They are likely travelling to one of their main feeding grounds.

So if you ever hear anybody say how Alcatraz is shark infested (Joe Rogan says it all the time), they're only half right because again, the sharks around there will not go out of their way to attack a human and all the real dangerous sharks (white sharks, bull sharks, tiger sharks, mako sharks, etc) don't really hangout around there unless they're passing through to go to one of their main hunting grounds and such.

Do you guys think they escaped or theie raincoat raft failed them & they drowned ?

Personally, I think they got away. They were smart enough to make a raincoat raft & hide it from the guards for months, along with the sophisticated escape plan.

They were never found or seen again, so what do you guys think ?

I like to think they may have gotten away. People race there every year

However its possible they just drowned too. They would have to follow the current that take you to the beach to make it.

Go against the current, raft leak, sink and drowned. Pretty easy to do.

off topic but you know what really pissed me off was in Shawshank Redemption, Andy banging that rock to open the pipe up. no way he could of fit threw a cracked circle hole.

All I know is, it was a pretty cool thing to make Patrick McGoohan (of The Prisoner) the warden in Escape from Alcatraz.

Just watched the new 2 hour special from history channel with the nephews and the photos. Pretty compelling in my opinion
