Do you guys think they escaped or theie raincoat raft failed them & they drowned ?

Personally, I think they got away. They were smart enough to make a raincoat raft & hide it from the guards for months, along with the sophisticated escape plan.

They were never found or seen again, so what do you guys think ?

I think they dieded. No way would they have been able to make it to land.

Someone has to have a story of Frank Morris after escaping. All I've ever heard is "they were never seen again". If no one has any stories about how the guy who works in the deli may or may not be the escaped convict from Alcatraz then all signs point to they drowned and died

Mythbuster did an experiment few years ago, and they made it. If the conditions of the weather & water were normal, it was possible.

They never found the bodies either, who knows. But I'd like to think that they made it. Rumor was that someone from inside the jail had arranged a boat for them & they fled to either mexico or Brazil.

They probably made it. A group wily enough to devise that escape plan wouldn't have been worried about the swim being the last obstacle.

why. they were career criminals.

All I know is, it was a pretty cool thing to make Patrick McGoohan (of The Prisoner) the warden in Escape from Alcatraz.

I think the swim was the only thing any body who tried to escape from Alcatraz was worried about. Including them. Because many had escaped the prison before, but didn't escape the bay because the water is too fucking cold at night. There was on guy who escaped the prison and as soon as he jumped in the water decided to go back to the prison.

Their raft was found on Angel Island with footprints leading away. I always found that interesting.

I love the movie, but reading actual accounts of the incident were much different. The main difference was that they actually did most of their escape prep above the cells, not in their cells. They were doing construction work above the cells and ingeniously convinced the staff that they needed to hang up curtains to block dust from flying around. This allowed them to work without being seen. There is also very strong evidence that they had at least one and maybe more guards helping them, possibly due to threats/blackmail/extortion etc..

Open case

"I think there's a good possibility that they survived," US Marshal Michael Dyke says.

"It's hard to say. We have to keep the case open since no bodies have been found, but about a month after they escaped in July 1962 a Norwegian freighter saw a body floating in the ocean 15 miles from the Golden Gate Bridge.

"He had on prison clothes - a navy pea coat and a light pair of trousers - similar to what prisoners wore. There were no other missing people during that time period."

He thinks that may have been the body of Frank Morris, believing the Anglin brothers would have looked after each other.

I have watched the movie but never read up on it to be honest. Just basing my opinion on the fact that they planned it for a year and made it out. For all we know they walked onto the far beach with wetsuits made of wool blankets to never be seen again lol.

Anytime I read about someone being lost at sea I think of that bit from jaws and the USS Indianapolis. If those guys survived five days on the open ocean...

At least they went out trying to escape, instead of dying in prison.

They prolly died of hypothermia, and then ended up getting eaten by the sharks, or crabs.

I'm sure that's exactly what they were telling each other while their nervous system was shutting down from hypothermia as sharks and crabs pulled their bodies apart.
