10th planet and regular bjj difference??? (including culture)

I'm guessing he's referring to that Taekwondo Jo or whatever his name is. An obese, borderline retarded, unfunny greaseball who for some inexplicable reason is on every other 10th Planet video.

It's the stand up comedian Joey Diaz who's good friends with Bravo. I think he's a white belt. The fat guy from the movie "The Longest Yard"

Oh joey Diaz. He is a funny dude.

Anyone know why Bravo called his school "10th planet"?

There is a long, boring, and interesting story behind the name. One day in 2005 after Eddie Bravo had just finished his daily routine of tying himself to his training dummy with cord in an effort to practice reducing his own hip movement, he stopped by the fridge for a tall glass of OJ to go with his joints. The OJ was expired, but after so many rubber guard stretches his meniscus hurt too much for him to walk to the store so he drank it anyway. That night he had the worst stomach pains of his life, and his life flashed before his eyes. He saw Little Eddie B., age 7, dreaming of one day twisting people, locking them down in various manners, and trapping them inside trucks and other motor vehicles. He saw college-age Stoner Ed, complaining about the government and the various conspiracies to keep marijuana illegal. He saw himself vs Royler, in which he pulled rubber guard, zombied, transferred through jiu claw, and tapped him with an inverted rubber crackhead chilldog triangleplata, which was totally NOT a regular triangle because it has a different name and something with a different name can't possible be something that existed previously. Finally Eddie woke up, and decided that his life had been so awesome, that he must inspire others to life the same life he had, by teaching them various moves in a new style of jiu jitsu based on his life. There was the rubber guard inspired by his totally NOT-standard triangle on Royler, the twister based on his love of twisted conspiracy theories, the truck based on his love of motor vehicles large enough to transport drugs across a border, and the lockdown based on his recent exercises to stop moving his hips entirely in an effort to bore the opponent to death. He would call this style 10th planet, because
he actually forgot why after his high wore off
and he opened the first school that very month.

I read Joe Rogan came up with it when they were high. At first Eddie wasn't sure, but then it dawned on him how cool it was.

Fascinating how people complain about the lockdown killing hip mobility, yet every single worthwhile technique from the lockdown mandates getting quite far onto one hip or the other.

I think he read a science fiction book that has a planet which the 10th planet from earth which has aliens in it.

Every so many hundreds years, it is aligned to earth and the aliens travelled back and forward.

The name of the planet is Nibiru.

First, Eddie wanted to call it the Nibiru Jiu Jitsu, the warriors from Niburur.

But Joe Rogan replied that it is cooler to call it the 10th planet Jiu Jitsu.

His forum is called Nibiru forum

The real question is why hasn't he renamed it 9th Planet

I'm a former 10th planet guy. Former Brazilian Top Team student. I don't have a wealth of experience, but I can tell you my experience.

I've never liked the gi so automatically 10th planet worked for me. I'm also lucky that my coach already had like 20 years of experience before he even became a 10th planet affiliate so we did more than just 10th Planet.

The major thing I love about 10th planet is that we rep the hell out of entire series. We don't just do a guard pass to a back take for a week then move onto triangle from guard the next week.

The last school that I attended was excellent. Great instructor. Great group of guys. The only thing that I didn't like was that I wasn't really given enough time to get good at any of the moves because we'd do them twice a week and move to something else the next week. That tends to be the case with most BJJ schools. But with 10th planet, I can still truck and banana split guys because we did it for like 2 to three weeks with different entries and finishes. So I know my standing passes that I got from BTT, but I'm not good at them. But I know my rubber guard stuff and I can still do it without thinking because I've done it so many times.

To effectively use a lot of 10th planet stuff you have to be very flexible.

Common misconception. If you can cross your legs like this

stock-vector-businessman-sitting-in-chair-crossed-his-legs-talk-on-phone-78106840.jpg

You can play rubber guard. It's all about getting a good angle. I'm not that flexible and i have no issue playing rubber guard and meathook.

10th planet is for losers who smoke weed and have horrible tattoos

damn you got me

10PJJ don't train in the gi at all, which is just awful for beginners - fundamentals should be learned in the gi, white belts doing nogi is always just a matter of who spazzes the hardest.

From experience, I disagree.

I've rolled with many 10P corona guys and they were ALL legit and IMO very technical. I personally think the reason why you don't see many 10P guys dominating the blackbelt scene is there mantra of not really stalling and always going for the kill.

Yeah I guess that's a valid theory. I can't think of any time that I've ever rolled with points in mind. I can't think of a time where I passed someone and thought "3 points." The only reason I pass is to get in position to submit.

I'm a BJJ purple belt from American Top Team (train Gi and No Gi at ATT), and also a 10th Planet purple belt (Each belt was promoted individually very recently). I don't really see much of a difference in terms of No Gi BJJ, as you're just learning another gyms way of doing things. Gyms will often specialize in things like spider guard, inverting, leg locks, smash passing, etc. This is the case in almost every gym I've ever visited, so it's not really specific to 10P. Obviously there's the Gi versus No Gi thing, but if you're looking to ONLY train No Gi, then 10P is likely one of your only options. In my case, I happen to enjoy both Gi and No Gi, and want to be as well rounded as I can. But at the same time I really had a lot of success with many of the 10P techniques/concepts, and did well in competition using the combination of fundamentals/defense I've learned in the Gi, with some of Eddie's unorthodox grappling. The combination of ATT for the past few years and training every few months with Eddie's guys has really worked well and been very enjoyable for me, but it's just what I gravitated towards.

You should just visit gyms and see what works for you though. High level instruction, and great teams can be found if you just look at the lineage/background, so it's all about what you feel best suits your needs.

I read Joe Rogan came up with it when they were high. At first Eddie wasn't sure, but then it dawned on him how cool it was.

This is true. At first Bravo wanted to actually name his BJJ school after what the 10th "planet" from the Sun was called (Nubira or something like that). Rogan said nobody would know what that is, and to just call it "10th Planet."

I'm quite sure they were also very high when they had this discussion.
