Why have no other games been made with the 4A engine? (Metro 2033/Last Light)

Let's be real here. While that engine looks good, it doesn't really compare to the 4A engine. Look at the lighting. It looks Unreal 3 like. The lighting and particle effects in the Metro games are just plain incredible at times. My screenshots weren't planned out so I wasn't really able to capture it but you know about it because you've played them.

The way the fog, smoke, sparks, dust, etc move around in various lightshafts is the main reason why the games are so immersive.

Let's not also forget their proprietary form of AA which while in-game says that it's SSAA, is really some kind of mix of whatever they use. Point being, the end result is zero jaggies without SSAA performance drops. It's brilliant.

Zoom in on my screenshots. Doesn't it almost look painted on? Look at the grating on the car? Have you ever seen grating look that clear in a game? lol
Perhaps so, but I simply intended to convey that even poor developers have the tools available to them to get incredible-looking games to run on just about anything.

I want the indie devs to have access to great engines too. But let's just agree that the 4A engine is in a league of it's own. I probably should have replied to the original poster.

I'm still halfway through Last Light for the 2nd time. Man is the pacing amazing. Took some more screens. The graphics are insanely immersive.

I don't agree with that. SW Battlefront looks better than Metro and runs better. Same with Doom. The Vanishing of Ethan Carter as well.

Metro has for the most part tiny, tiny linear environments. It's a lot easier to ramp up details when you don't need to worry about draw distance.

Umm, no.

Ethan Carter maybe, but it's a game made for still shots. Let me see if I can dig some up from when I attempted to actually beat it.

Here we go. I took these a couple years ago. Thet look good, but no fucking way do they look better than my Metro screenshots. You are forgetting how important lighting and particle effects are in games.

My eyeballs give those draw distance showdowns a devastating win to Battlefront. Holy shit does that look good.

Still, that's a pretty goddamn cool fog effect they have going on in the trees in the upper right corner of the top frame in Metro. That's those particle effects at work. Looks pretty goddamn real if you've ever been in a similar environment (ex. Humboldt, Mendocino, Sonoma, Lake, or Del Norte counties in California).

I just started playing metro redux and it is definitely a cool engine but damn the sound fx are weak, there's no "punch" to the guns at all.

i think the new variant will fix that in exodus

you know whats weird, the frost engine seems to be more "pretty" now and doesn't have much in the way of destruction anymore

I think metro is probably one of the best games at demonstrating that even if you don't have the absolute GOAT graphics engine that you can go far beyond that if your graphics engine is right for your purpose. Metro was such an immersive game that you really FELT the game world like no other. It's been hard for me to exactly describe to friends what makes the game so great, but I guess the best way is to say that you really feel like you are a part of the world while playing. In that it's probably the best execution of a graphics engine that has been done lately.

The screenshots definitely dont do it justice, especially with all the partical and lighting effects. GTA V in 1st Person is the only game that rivals that immersion you talk about.

Crysis 3 and Deus Ex: MD are runners up imo.

Played Last Light again and it's simply a groundbreaking series.

One thing I noticed this time was while I was in one of the stations, the conversations would just fire off in rapid fashion. I was at one point, stuck between 3 different conversations and on my 7.1 it was a kaleidoscope of voice through my speakers as I spun around the room.

And the graphics are beast. Some more pics.
