I've been in the US for over 20 years and I've never seen this country so divided. People disagreed with each other, but the level of hostility against the other side is something I haven't seen ever. Friends and family are broken up because of politics to an extent I've never seen before. Is it because of the internet and social media where people who didn't care about politics are forced into it via social sites like Facebook?

The 60's probably.

20 years ago people didn't believe their opinions carried so much weight and they were told no more.

Late 70s/early 80s.

Remnants of Vietnam, economy looking like something that is jumping back and forth between alive/about to die.

Yeah it’s becoming a bit crazy. A lot of it is fueled through social media outlets unfortunately.

The problem is that the State has grown so big and has begun to become overtly tyrannical. Some of us see it and some of us don't. Those that see it are trying to push back. Those that don't see it and still buy into all of the lies and propaganda has decided to side with the State. And theres your division.

If families are divided over politics then they were shit families to begin with.

I've always hated Commies, and people that don't understand the need for the 2A, and career welfare recipients, and people who have lost their connection with the earth and the natural order of things, and people that are light on personal hygiene.

And fat people.

The important thing is that it's us vs. them and the division, like all bad things, is their fault.

Edit: I see that people have already made this claim, but unironically

Country needs something LIKE this. Not necessarily a sporting event but something that drags everyone back together essentially.

"Patriotism, was not really in vogue"

Think that fits for now.

I agree and usually a sporting event or terrorist attack does the job

Like, if you look back at the times the US has been in these sort of issues these are the things that dragged the country out of those "funks" right/wrong better/worse:

- WWII. Primarily Pearl Harbor. Galvanized the country and almost immediately you didn't hear anything about isolationism at that stage.

- "Miracle on Ice" game. It helped the states AND it helped other countries too. An example, my mom was living in Osaka at the time after spending a brief year at school in Australia. Japan, being right next to Korea, China, and Russia felt the world was very much sliding to them. Then the hockey game happened where a pack of US College kids defeated essentially pro players and even in Japan there was a sense of "the Soviets can be beaten".

- 9/11. Christ, 9/11 made people line up in droves to support a government act that removed a ton of our rights (Patriot Act)

- The DEVGRU assault on OBL and killing him. Fuck, look at the reaction at the Phillies game when it happened:

is it any wonder?

when both sides keep trying to get their
supporters riled up over some bullshit

You are a stooge of the state though. You dont push back shit, you endorse every move. Did you forget that conservatives control literally all branches now?

Yes, and because now EVERYONE uses social media. Back when facebook was college only we never had divisiveness like this. Now older people who didn't grow up with the internet don't understand that people make fake things on the internet just for the sake of making fake things on the internet.

With all the pornstar/trump crap...I fear this is the most dangerous time for trump.

Trump might get us in some sort of conflict to rally people around the flag.....They just need a good enough narrative to convince Americans.

But college kids say crazy things! They're practically at the gates, ready to bring everything down

TBF, the Philippines has had problems with Al Quieda before too. Not surprising they were thrilled about him getting killed.
