What kind of home will $500,000 buy you in your area?

About 5 bed/4 bath 3500/4K sqft with a two car garage on an acre plus.

Housing is incredibly cheap in my area.

They're hedging against a looming housing bubble back in China. Their housing prices have risen to unreasonable levels, with many of them being uninhabitable(they have a thing for not finishing interiors).

Theres estimates that they've invested over $1trillion in American residential real estate alone. My concern is that we need more American homeowners and less American renters- this doesn't help.

Thanks for the quick response.

The one complaint I've seen locally is that local businesses have created two part time jobs for every full time position, and virtually eliminated full time positions aside from management, to avoid Obamacare for employees, and now the complaints have gone from "I can't get a job anywhere" to "I don't make enough money to be able to afford a house of my own"

Renting has skyrocketed to a ridiculous level

3 rooms in total, 753 square feet and in need of total renovation!

Thats around $650K AUD at the moment, which gets you a decent traditional three bedroom bungalow on a reasonable size block, or a modern townhouse on a smaller black around here.
It's at the low end of the market though (cheap 3br homes in the "bad" outer suburbs start at around $250K AUD).
If you're prepared to go just a little further out of the CBD (a 15 minute drive) you can get a fair bit more for your money.

Traditional 3br Bungalow looking for $640K AUD close to my area.

500K? In Toronto? You could get something quite nice.

In 1995.

That would still buy you a nice upper-class house in small-town Germany.
Even better if you are willing to live like 5-10 km out of town.
How much is that Euro 400,000 that still gets you a very good house.
Different if you would go to Munich or something.

“Conservative shithole area” detected.

Around here 500k gets you:
Private driveway on multiple acres
5+ bed
5+ bath
3+ car garage
4000+ sq feet

My house was about 200k
4 bed
3 bath
2 car garage
2250 sq ft
On 1 acre lot.
It was less than 10 years old when we bought it.

it's hard to say in the South Florida housing market, it all depends on where you live and the school district. I had a 1800 sq ft three bedroom two bath with a pool backed up to a golf course in one city that I sold for $400,000. Ended up moving to a 3,800 sq ft four bedroom (two master suites), loft and three and a half bath with pool for $475,000 that was just about six mile north. now the place I bought needed some work done which wasn't a big deal for me but fixed up the place would only list for about $550,000.

just went on zillow and looked up everything currently on sale for up to 600k in the city of thousand oaks california. there are some condo's and town homes for 500k, but the absolute lowest priced home in the city currently is for $555,000. Its a 3 bed 2 bath 1,230 sqft home on a kinda high traffic undesirable street. You can find decent homes when you get up above 600k and nice homes in the 700k+ range. According to wiki, the median home price is 700k in this city
