What is purpose of Jones stomp/side kicks? They don't do damage and probably don't score either.

I've never understood why Jones throws all those stomp and side kicks. They probably score lower than a jab, don't hurt his opponents, and he often misses with them anyway.

Is he using them as a range finder to get a better grasp of the distance?
