President Donald Trump dispensed with diplomacy at the United Nations, vowing in his maiden speech to the General Assembly that the United States “will have no choice but to totally destroy North Korea” if it is forced to defend itself or its allies.

The remarks, reminiscent of those of Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev’s vow in 1968 to “bury” the West, is likely to raise tensions with North Korea, whose nuclear-weapons and missile programs have raised the alarm in Asian capitals and Washington. North Korea, with its regular battery of missile tests, as well as a recent nuclear test, is believed to be close to—if it doesn’t already possess—the ability to strike the United States with an intercontinental ballistic missile armed with a nuclear warhead.

“Rocket man is on a suicide mission for himself and for his regime,” Trump said at the UN on Tuesday, a reference to Kim Jong Un, the North Korean leader. “The United States is ready, willing and able, but hopefully this will not be necessary.”

Trump urged the UN and its member states to “do much more” to “isolate the Kim regime until it ceases its hostile behavior.” He thanked China and Russia for their votes to tighten sanctions on the North, but it is those two countries—both veto-wielding members of the UN Security Council—that are most reluctant to press for any international solution that would weaken or destabilize North Korea.

Trump’s address was a marked departure from Monday’s comments at the UN, an organization he previously dismissed as “a club for people to get together, talk, and have a good time.” On Monday, he said the UN “was founded on truly noble goals … [it] has not reached its full potential because of bureaucracy and mismanagement.” His departure in tone closely tracked with speeches he made early on in his presidency. Trump was praised for his remarks in Saudi Arabia and Israel, but was criticized for his subsequent speech in Europe where he failed to endorse NATO’s commitment to mutual defense.

Trump, whose speech was reportedly drafted by Stephen Miller, his adviser, also listed Iranian transgressions in the Middle East, calling Iran a “reckless regime … that speaks openly of mass murder, vowing death to America, destruction to Israel, and ruin for many leaders and nations in this room.” He said Iran funds terrorism, supports Syria’s Assad regime, fuels Yemen’s civil war, and undermines peace. He also provided clues to what his administration might do with the nuclear agreement that Iran signed with the United States and other world powers in 2015.

“We cannot let a murderous regime continue these destabilizing activities while building dangerous missiles, and we cannot abide by an agreement if it provides cover for the eventual construction of a nuclear program,” he said. “The Iran deal was one of the worst and most one-sided transactions the United States has ever entered into. Frankly, that deal is an embarrassment to the United States and I don’t think you’ve heard the last of it, believe me.”

Trump’s speech was billed as a testament to his commitment to national sovereignty, and it was a topic the president, who campaigned on a theme of “America First,” raised even as he outlined his view of how the world can tackle common challenges.

“I was elected not to take power, but to give power to the American people where it belongs,” he said. “In foreign affairs, we are renewing this principle of sovereignty. The government’s first duty is to the people, our first duty is to our citizens: to serve their needs, to ensure their safety and to preserve their rights and to defend their values. As president of the United States, I will always put America first, just like you as the leaders of your countries will always and should always put your countries first.”

Trump also listed other challenges the world faces, including terrorism, Russia’s interference in Ukraine, Syria, and “uncontrolled migration,” which he said “is deeply unfair to both the sending and receiving countries.” But it’s his remarks on North Korea that are likely to receive most attention. “If the righteous many do not confront the wicked few, then evil will triumph,” Trump said, calling for international cooperation on North Korea, which has become a test of his young administration’s policies.

Before Trump’s remarks on Tuesday, his administration, after several false starts, appeared to have coalesced around a common message on North Korea: one that favored diplomacy to defuse the threat posed by Kim Jong Un’s nuclear and missile programs, while keeping all options on the table. After the president’s remarks, it’s once again unclear what the U.S. policy on North Korea is.

Trump wants KJU to act first. He's desperate for war, but has been told he can't fire the first shot. So instead he resorts to schoolboy taunts in front of the UN General Assembly in his first speech to that body.

It was a pretty odd speech. I can't imagine how those words would decrease the risk of nuclear war. Tensions haven't been this high since the axe murder incident.

Tweet softly, but carry a big stick:)

The Donald is well aware that military options range from Bad to Catastrophic. He's just flexing his muscles. There's no real difference between this and Fat Boy claiming he's going to destroy America(except, of course, that America really could wipe Best Korea of the map). Neither Fat Boy nor the God Emperor wants to throw the first punch. It's just posturing.

I agree it's probably just posturing. But I don't recall an American president talking in this manner in years if ever.

It really does seem like he wants a nuclear war with NK. And Trump is a big enough narcissist that he would probably get satisfaction out of killing millions of Koreans just so he could brag about how "tough" he is.

Good.

Kim Chee Gout ain't got the balls. Trump knows this, and is gonna punk him on the world stage. It's time we stop rewarding NK for bad behavior.

The North Korean regime are a stain but I'm not sure if millions of North Korean's deserve nuclear bombs dropped on them though.

Unfortunately that will happen when you have a insane quasi communist man with a God complex in charge of your country.

Not to mention those millions of people are brainwashed anyways.

The entire situation is a sad on so many levels.
Because if it was any other country I be strongly against this but unfortunately it's not. And to quote Dawn of the Dead they just need to do what has to be done.

NK should have never even allowed to be a country in the first place.

Why call him rocketman? What's the rationalization in doing that? I guess if anything it shows how simplistic Trump's mind works to think it's clever to be so boorish and cartoon like.

Who keeps shoving Iran down Trumps throat? He's always throwing that same line of bullshit trying to paint Iran as worse than Saudi Arabia and other mid east countries.
