Not really. Chael Sonnen earned both his title shots at MW by winning fights and by being a top three MW throughout that period.

He didn't earn his title shot against Jones. He simply made himself available at a time when LHW was cleaned out and no one was eager to fight Jones. It is worth remembering that Jones had already faced another long time MW in Belfort, so Chael didn't set any precedent by stepping up to LHW to fight Jones.
