Ya. Though more the 2nd and 3rd more like what he teaches (theres some of the JJJ/self defence stuff on the site)

Hey, they the Osoto Gari vid isnt up anymore.:icon_surp

Done

Still works for me.

Can I just add that all their judo throws suck?

O Soto Guruma means Greater outer wheel. Not Great reaping throw, thats the aforementioned sucky O soto gari.

The Yoko Otoshi sucked as well.

Im sorry Im not hating but look at this http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/osotoguruma.htm and compare it to what they're doing...

Excuse my idiocy, so in the O soto gari, you're supposed to sweep both legs?

Disclaimer: I know absolutely dick about Judo, but am starting soon.

No, you only reap one leg. Please never watch that video, it teaches you nothing. Utter crap, the ground work is pretty cheesy too.

I would have to say that those guys are worse than me, and I suck

I'm a member of Ari's site. I think he is a great instructor alhtough I would agree he does not put brown/black belt level detail in his videos.

you guys can find a bunch of free training videos here

www.tapskillz.com

the videos are organized from a grappler's point of view like this:

Guard - Top (all the moves from guard top position)
Guard - Bottom (all the moves from guard bottom position)
Side Control - Top (all the moves from side control top position)
Side Control - Bottom (all the moves from side control bottom position)
etc.

this is the only site that organizes videos this way. enjoy!

Those are some pretty good videos there tapskillz.

Ari is an awesome teacher, I can atest to that (train there, haven't been in a couple months)and that some of the moves are a bit useless (they're options, but I'd rather get better at the basics first). The dojo is starting to go through the transition to a more grappling gym than the more traditional JJJ it was a year ago.

Hizoo; have you ever trained at a real grappling school? If not, no offense, but your opinion is relatively moot. Reason being, he may seem good to his students and their parent's checkbooks, but I trained under a guy like that once. Very good Aikido guy, but shit on the ground. I thought he was awesome on the ground cuz he knew so many techniques and was good at teaching them. Then, we went to a local competition and he got subbed 2x and I realized he sucked (on the ground at least). I decided to find better instruction after that.

BTW; my current instructor once went to my old instructor's school (while I was still there) and tooled him in front of all his students. He had it coming, though as my old instructor claimed an undefeated record in "challenge matches" and also taught and advertised Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes, despite only have one series of BJJ instructional DVD's that he learned all of his techniques off of.

No, I have not trained at a full BJJ school, nor do I think Ari is some l33t grappling king, nor does he claim to be. I do however like the atmosphere and don't view it as the place as a really high level competition grappling school, but rather as a group of people gathering because they are interested in grappling with no other place to really go. If I was in a city that had a good grappling/BJJ place to train and I could afford it, I'd go.

look as many of us said before, i think that his heart is in the right place. Dude, can you ask about his background and what kind of grappling styles he has trained other than judo?

From his website of his school
" Sensei Ari Bolden is the Owner and Chief Instructor at the Victoria Jujitsu Academy. He has been involved in the martial arts since 1984, and took a special interest in the grappling arts at a young age. His main study included Daito Ryu Aiki Jujitsu and Goshin Jujitsu (2nd Degree Black Belt), Brazilian Jiujitsu, 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu (under Eddie Bravo) Submission wrestling and Shin Shin Toistu Aikido (1st Degree Black Belt). The system which Sensei Bolden founded and teaches at the Dragon's Lair is called Ryu Bu Kan Jujitsu, which pulls from several styles of jujitsu, both traditional and modern."

All I know is that when I HAD to teach for a few months, I always felt very uncomfortable teaching anything I hadn't 100% confidence in.

This was as a blue teaching 90% new whites.

I always made that clear: "Sure, I can show you what an Osoto Gari looks like, I can even put your ass on the mat with it, but I don't know the details, sorry..."

So whenever we had our good Sambo guy come in, I let him teach some Takedowns.

This was a situation where we had no other choice but to teach ourselves to keep the club going.
We also arrange for a BB to come down for a 2day seminar every month.

We did nothing but the basics.

Why one would try to teach others something he hasn't a full grasp of and then make a website out of it, is beyond me.

Great guys, know their Jiu Jitsu well and i have learned a lot from their website.
