Pretty good video, I got Covington by ud.

Im always kinda sad when matchups like this roll round, since i like both guys and would hate to see either lose, and whoever does will likely be derailed from title contention for a long time (maybe even for good in Maia's case).

At the same time though, it's one of those rare matchups in MMA where it's two guys likely to go strength vs strength. Something which promises a high level display between two specialists, and will be interesting to see who('s way of doing things) comes out on top, and how.

Awesome match up... Maia is going to show this kid you don't grapple with him...

Maia and comparatively easily IMHO.

Could happen, but I think Covington will take the Woodley route- he is more than capable of it. He will be quite stupid if he tries to grapple with Maia for prolonged periods of time.. Covington is no Jake Shields.

Let's see if he choses to go that road... That's his best shot, although I don't think he can shake Maia off constantly as twood did...

I wish Maia would develop a leglock game to surprise opponents.

I hope so, I never get tired of watching Maia take people to grappling school. It would be cool to see him work a kimura trap vs Covington.

I think you'd be surprised how good his leg lock game is. His preference is that if on top he'd rather pass than maybe get the leg leg lock
Oh, I'm sure he knows plenty, but if there is something that his game lacks is "scrambleness", leglocks could help with that.

Colby's not the sharpest crayon, but I don't see him being dumb enough to try to wrestle.

Colby's strong point in all his fights heretofore has been take down and grapplefuck; i don't see him taking a swerve to rasleboxer Covington out of the blue here.

I fact i'd say he will likely, like Gunar Nelson, look to take Maia head on to try and prove a point.

Covington just isn't the striker or wrestler Woodley his, good though he may be.

demian stood with Anderson, Rory, and Weidman, and didn't get hurt significantly, even held his own. He can very likely stand with Covington

You understand that Maia had deliberately made every effort to not have to deal with or be a scrambler die to not being the best athlete right? I’m also curious what you think a “scramble” is? Because from all of my experience and observations the best leg lock guys do not scramble, quite the opposite in fact

Tonon is quite a scrambler...

I think Jack's point is that the best leg lockers have enough positional skill to eliminate the more variable "scramble" factor traditionally associated with the entanglements, and he's right.

I’m very clearly talking about the actual positions they use to get the actual leg lock.. and the sequences used to get there the majority of the time. There is much more method than madness to what Tomon does.

Much like the Heavy Hands guys get really annoyed at the outfighters always being called the most “technical” and that infighters are brawlers. I get annoyed at anyone athletic or or who hustles being called a “scrambler”

Yup

If we are judging basing on accomplishments, Tyron and Covington have had similar success in college; both were D1 All Americans, but only Tyron has gained relative success in freestyle (USA national team runner up).
