Dont do anything besides light jogging.

do you train at tecumseh martials arts?

no i train with paragon

im glad my injury isnt as bad as crazy monkeys, hope you heal fast bro...take it easy dont rush the healing process. better a couple of weeks then a couple of months.

well my ribs dont hurt when i breath just when i sniff and put some pressure on that side...so i guess its a normal occurence huh? probably just some torn cartlidge, i might just take a couple days off rolling and just practice some techniques...

does anyone know if it can get worst if i dont treat it carefully?
thanks for the replies
peace

not really, unless they're crossed, then a chairopractor would fix you best.

the doc will just charge you money and tell you to rest and take antiinflammatories

sounds like you might have seperated them... that sucks. I did that once and it took a long ass time to heal.

This happened to me yesterday. Just like with TS I was freaked out by it, the feeling of a relatively loud pop, but the pain wasnt so bad, almost like there is no pain, just this disconcerting pop. Now it has popped like 3 more times, once more when I tried to keep rolling and once at 5 or 6 a.m. this morning as I lay on my back in bed and my abs must have tightened or something, then pop goes the rib. I am a physician, but dont know much about this problem. From the lack of any significant pain (feels strange when cough or get out of bed but otherwise no real pain) I think it is a partial separation, not a broken rib or a completely separated rib. I think I will talk to one of my colleagues who specializes in orthopedics or sports medicine, and maybe get an xray just to be sure there is nothing else going on. My initial thoughts are that rest is better than having someone try to pop it into place, because that sounds like it could cause more problems. TS, hope you have had a full recovery.

By the way, my injury occured during jiu jitsu. Myself and another white belt were rolling. I was on bottom and my job was to break him down. I pulled his gi down and he quickly posted his left hand into my lower right rib cage. Then a sudden pop which he heard and felt, and we both immediately stopped rolling and I jumped up and started walking around, trying to figure out what had happened. surprisingly little pain, but very unnerving.

You've done your cartilage. It CAN be more serious then you think - your ribs are now in a "weakened state" and prone to be re-injured although they might feel OK.

If you don't let it heal properly and try to go back to training too early, you WILL RE-INJURE them. Every time you re-injure them, they will get worse and weaker and take longer to heal.

I have BEEN THERE and DONE THAT. My eagerness to return to training caused me to have this injury for a LOT longer than I should have, because the ribs kept popping. In the beginning it was only minor, but later - they popped out so bad it was like having the breath knocked out of me.

Basically you can do things like weights, running swimming etc. You CAN go back to BJJ/judo whatever - but only after a (few) weeks of rest. There are stretches you can do in the meantime - but you need to go see a physio to get specific advice and who can treat you.

However, at ALL COSTS do NOT perform any twisting movements ESPECIALLY twisting with force/pressure. So bridging out of a pin, throws like tai-otoshi, or getting stacked are NOT GOOD. If it happens to pop again - even a little bit STOP IMMEDIATELY and do not train further that session. ICE the area.

Roll light only, if someone stacks you, tap or ask them to stop. Use pure technique with no power behind it.

A small investment in missing training now is cheap insurance in NOT missing a lot more training in the months to come. It is what I wish I had done when I had the first pop and tried to just shrug it off.

NOOOOOO!! Did you train at all during that time? Weights, cardio, stretching, anything? I definitely don't want to re-injure myself, but it's going to be hard to sit still for 2 weeks.

Go to a doctor. This is the internet. No offense to Sahei but he could could bomb the diagnosis over the internet-even if he was a doctor. Go to a doctor. If the doc agrees with the diagnosis, then listen to Sahei's advice, if he doesn't try to get more applicable advice.

Yes and No. DON'T go to a doctor... at least - don't bother going to a "general practicioner". They are in generally useless when it comes to this sort of thing, since it is not their area of expertise.

Go to a person knowledgeable about muscle/joint/sports injuries. A (sports) physiotherapist would be my preference.

My old gen practitioner was good, so I guess I am spoiled. Good advice though

I have broken my ribs plenty of times from playing rugby union but never heard a pop, if its a popping noise you could have actually dislocated one or popped one over the top of another, which is pretty rare but painful

I've had cracked ribs too. A big heavy black belt did a soto-makikomi and landed on top of me when I was a brown - I was so p*ssed, it was a terrible technique but it was all he had, the f#cker. They were painful too, but they healed quicker.

Given the chioce between a cracked rib and rib cartilage damage (ie a "popped" or "dislocated' rib) I wold take the cracked rib any day. At least weh a crack heals it is as good as new, whereas a popped one keeps coming back after the initial one.

And the crack isnt as painful when two bones grind together or get stuck on each other

I had a weakened rib pop out at training.

It popped out, but did not pop back in and there was a lump under the skin. Very painful - all the way home it was sore as anything. Hard to breathe too.

Luckily the person at the reception gave me an icepack and I took some anti-inflams. That evening I was still in pain, lying on the bed pressing an icepack on it while watching TV. I was pressing down firmly on the icepack, when all of a sudden there was another unexpected "pop" as the rib popped back into place! It was almost instantaneous relief.

talked to my colleague. A sports medicine specialist who says it sounds like I separated a rib (which I already knew) and recommended that I rest for 1 week and if the popping continues, they will help get the subluxed rib back into position - with some kind of non-invasive procedure/breathing exercise. I am hoping the thing will just stop popping, but we will see. My instructor did his rib a lot worse and was out for a long time a couple years ago, but apparently his was very painful. Hopefully mine is mild, cuz the pain is really pretty minimal, just this disconcerting feeling, unstable feelilng and intermittent popping.

I got an xray and it turns out my rib is just broken. Hopefully it will heal up fully and I will be ready to rock soon.

lol its funny to be relieved to have something "just broken" isnt it?

good luck bro, being injured sucks. try to make it to class anyway just to watch and maintain your connection with the gym. it will make it easier to come back.
