Artistry is too subjective. One man's trash is another's treasure. Sometimes directors get too cutesy with artistry and it just detracts from a film instead. Not everything needs some sort of flair. Many movies are better off as straight forward punches to the mouth.

Yes, it added stuff, but it also had things that I liked more in the original, so overall it didn't really add anything for me. How did it double the moral scope? It passed the buck on some of Cady's immorality to Bowden. And, I don't care as much for the remake Bowden. It adds a sense that maybe he deserves some of it, which in turn detracts a bit from Cady. Bowden is a nice, polite guy in the original. It's more about how much can this nice, calm man take before he pushes back. I find that more interesting, though the movie would have been better served if Bowden ended up killing Cady in the end.

What was unique about them? I don't really remember the wife's perspective nor really care.

The family would have a 'coming back together' moment regardless if they were a dysfunctional family or not. Senselessly evil guy? LOL, the De Niro version is an over-the-top comic book character. You can beat the shit out of him with steel pipes, you can set his head on fire, and you can bash him in the face with a rock, but none of that matters, he keeps coming at you like he's the Terminator. Some problems remakes/sequels make is that they take ideas from the original and then run them into the ground. It seems like Scorsese was so concerned with making it different that he ran some of the ideas into the ground. Did I need an over-the-top, constantly in your face, cheerleader of a villain? No, I prefer the more subtle approach of the original. It seems like some of the stuff Scorsese added was just there to manipulate the audience.

The original pushed the boundaries for its time. As for the remake, I'm not saying it's not worthy. It is a worthy remake, but I prefer pretty much all of Scorsese's other work to it.

It might well just be that most of Scorsese's work is just underwhelming to me. His early stuff was great, and I obviously liked Cape Fear, but everything since has just been so meh to me.

The Exorcist is way overrated. I actually prefer The Exorcist 3. Oh, and the Tubular Bells theme doesn't fit the movie at all, and I like Mike Oldfield.

The Exorcist is amazing. Easily, in my opinion, the greatest horror film ever made. And the Exorcist III is one of the all-time most underrated films. George C. Scott is brilliant in it. It always bothered me how much that flick gets looked over.

I agree on The Departed. Its first acts was masterful and it was on pace to be one of Marty's best features, but it went off the rails and ended up being almost a poor man's Cohen Bros film.

I mean, the Coen Brothers are just better than Scorcese at this point.

Also, thought @Trotsky would give it bonus points for referencing the communist rebels victory over the bought and paid for Batista regime.

Haha, I did like that, but it had almost no plot value or symbolic value. I mean, you could argue it was meant as a vague allegory for Michael's hunger and Roth's idleness, but meh.

My picks are:
True Grit

The original I'm guessing? If so, I agree. The Coen Brothers' remake wasn't as exciting as I hoped it would be, but it was still well-directed and very well-acted. Jeff Bridges is just so unfairly talented.

Either of the Blade Runner movies, such a shit bomb of terrible overrated movies where literally nothing happens in either movie. Just movies for a bunch of hipsters to pretend they see a bunch of crap in a movie when in reality nothing happens.

Gran Torino
Million Dollar Baby
300

Very solid picks.

300 is, breathtaking visuals aside, is so goddamn cheesy, stupid, and historically ludicrous. Having the Spartans be homoerotically dressed homophobes was hilarious, though.

Godfather 1 and 2 are great but 2 should have been 2 diff movies. Departed is great. Fight club is good but not close to the others.

Goodfellas is best mafia movie of all time

Grandmas boy is awful.

I agree on The Depahted. Definitely one of Scorsese's worst flicks. It says something when Marky Mark gives the best performance in your movie. Infernal Affairs was way better
I like the Departed much more than I liked Gangs of New York.

Lord of the rings. Especially the first one which consisted of the hobbits staring into each others eyes as if they were in love. Fell asleep during that awfull movie.

Nah nah seriously how the fuck can you not be into the first two godfather movies. They are like a celebration of whats possible with film itself. And the same goes for Apocalypse Now. Coppola Top Team

Schindler’s List.

Fuck outta here son

This has to be a joke. Ran gets a 1? The great Escape a 2? That's not even possible.

Putting PASSION's passion aside, try out APOCALYPTO for the height of his directorial powers.

As for actor-to-actor, it's interesting you side with Clooney. I like them both, but I would have to say Clooney wouldn't be able to pull off the range of roles Gibson has tackled. I would still classify Mel Gibson as a "movie star," whereas I might reserve for Clooney the status of "leading man," which he does indeed play greatly.
Apocalypto is massively underrated, I love that fucking movie. Good call!

The Exorcist is way overrated. I actually prefer The Exorcist 3. Oh, and the Tubular Bells theme doesn't fit the movie at all, and I like Mike Oldfield.
Good thing no one listens to you.

Exorcist III isn't as great as the Exorcist but its really good. Its the ending that sucks. That's the only flaw.

Its more really that I don't think Marty's artistry is very well suited to films like this, his strength tends to be getting subtle performances out of actors and slowlty building atmosphere/location. The Departed for me feels like a film fighting its own nature, he's wanting to pull it towards being a Goodfella's/Caino style epic but this ends up killing a lot of the tension in the plot, the same with Gangs of Newyork although I think that benefits from being more of a character study.

Watchman. Zack Snyder is a hack and shouldnt be allowed to direct a movie ever.
