Kamaru Usman never surpassed Matt Hughes

Yeah, they're better athletes hence why they didn't completely collapse like Hendricks post USADA for instance.

So did GSP fight Hendricks pre-USADA or post-USADA?

You're a total fucking idiot if you think Demian Maia was a better athlete than pre-USADA Hendricks.

I'm always surprised when people place Usman ahead of Hughes and had him threatening GSP. I think it's a clear case of recency bias at play. Let's compare their title wins by using Fight Matrix historical rankings of each title contender at the time of their fights.

Matt Hughes:
Carlos Newton (#1)
Hayato Sakurai (#6)
Carlos Newton (#5)
Gil Castillo (#3)
Sean Sherk (#2)
Frank Trigg (#2)
GSP (#9)
Frank Trigg (#4)
BJ Penn (#3)

Kamaru Usman:
Tyron Woodley (#1)
Colby Covington (#3)
Jorge Masvidal (#2)
Gilbert Burns (#3)
Jorge Masvidal (#4)
Colby Covington (#2)

Even if you give Usman's wins more weight due to modern welterweight being deeper, I still think it's pretty clear that Hughes' resume is on the same level, if not better.

In fact, the only two fighters on Hughes' title resume who weren't top 5 welterweights at the time he fought them are GSP and Sakurai, which in hindsight are two of his most impressive wins. So GSP and Sakurai were underrated at the time while Colby and Masvidal were arguably overrated in their rematches.

To sum it up, Hughes had more title wins against a bigger variety of opponents, and his best wins are as good as Usman's best wins.

I just don't see why everyone's so sure that Usman is ahead of Hughes as a champion. He needed the win over Edwards to make the argument.
and nothing here is valid

Kamaru has more title defences than hughes consecutively and all together so he def passed hughes nothing you stated is valid at all

And after the you can give who ever more weight due to competition.. I had to x you off for ignorance and 0 commen sense ..

2 fighters in 2 different generations but you want to compare there compitition..

Youre an idiot prolly from this gen or in between that's how most people think..

Go back look at the criteria that matters who had the belt who has the consecutive title defences.. then it comes to how many times were they able to get the belt back ..

Usman: 6 consecutive title wins. 6 total.

Hughes: 6 consecutive title wins plus 3 consecutive title wins. 9 total.

9 is more than 6.

Is counting too difficult for you?

By your own criteria Hughes is the better champion, and...oh right, he actually got the belt back, unlike Usman.

You compare the competition based on how good they were for their time.

GSP, BJ Penn, Sakurai are better talents than Masvidal, Colby, and Burns. Frank Trigg was a D1, Olympic trials wrestler who learned BJJ from Cesar Gracie.

That is, if they were fighting today with modern training, we all know who would be the better fighters.

Hughes in modern training would probably be a lightweight but he would be Khabib-level.

He never failed a drug test (just like GSP) so your point is irrelevant anyway.

The only way to know their real value under USADA is to see them fighting under USADA. Too bad GSP has a virtually non existent career under USADA unlike Hendricks who got exposed.

Here's one :

Or like Rogan or GSP himself ? : https://forums.sherdog.com/posts/172255856/

You're a delusional fanboy stuck in the past. You're so delusional that you even dared to speak about doping in favor or Hughes in one of your post, i mean like if current UFC fighters weren't the actual fighters under proper drug testing (USADA).
This shows a strong misunderstanding of PEDs. The PEDs used now are absolutely more beneficial than the drostanolone and so on back then. The testing is irrelevant because they cannot catch the people using them, especially EPO and HGH.

thats right but the fighters that usman fought was far better than hughes
far harder
matt hughes wont be even top 10 today

you judge fighters during their time, not against the future generation. usman is going to look like a can against the future generations. it's unfair to judge fighters upon the future.

There's a reason Usman is a mile behind GSP and Hughes in historically adjusted ELO ratings that take into account the strength of opponents at the time they were fought.

Because that's where he belongs. TS is right. Hughes is clear #2. Usman never surpassed him.

"historically adjusted ELO ratings" ??

lol read that shit again

how can such a silly concept be used in a discussion about MMA as if it had some sort of legitimacy ffs.

Do you mean the same "historically adjusted ELO ratings" that rank Yamaguchi and Urusihitani as top5 Flyweights of all-time while the likes of Joe Benavidez is barely even top10?:eek::eek:
Semmy Shilt top20 HW of all-time in MMA?
Legit ELO right there
<{Heymansnicker}>

He won 15 UFC fights in a row. He surpassed Hughes. You guys are dumb fucks.

And even more imporantlly, Usman did so in the premier org at his time.

Unlike Hughes, American posterboy for the UFC audicence back when most of the top talent were fighting for better money in Pride.
