Jon Jones is totally pulling a Champion Bisping in front of our eyes.
Similarities between the two:
-Immediately called out only old men who are semi-retired and shouldn’t even be ranked at this point for an easy win/title defense
-Called it a “legacy” fight, said they deserve this
-Defended the stupid matchups by referencing their long career
-Completely ignored the interim champion of the division, who at this point is basically the actual champ
-Interim champ now has to wait another year
-Jones/Bisping never intended on unifying the belts -> Interim champ becomes full champ once they retire with their “legacy” fights

nope nope nope nope nope nope nope, he's not ducking anyone, he's currently getting surgery from an injury after that he will fight stipe miocic as originally planned, this is a fight promised by dana to the fans and as long as these guys are still under contract with the UFC this is a fight I'm expecting to see

Aspinall stepped up and won an interem title, but lets be real, no one creates an interem title because a champ got injured 5 monthes removed from his last fight into his next, they only did that because they wanted a championship fight on the card not because of any in-action from the current champion, in normal circustances the fight wouldn't have been for an interem title, Also bisping has a single title defence against dan henderson so theres that

If Jones is indeed the Bisping of HW, then I would not mind seeing him getting wrecked by a lighter fighter the way GSP wrecked Bisping

Bisping beat the actual champ. Not the same.

He's attempted to do the same type of reign as Bisping though. Just needs to call out Chuck Liddell to fight him as his 2nd title defense at HW after Stipe.

Couple of things.

Bisping beat the actual champion in his division. In the sense that he beat the belt holder but also the lineal champion of his weightclass.

Also. You're nuts if you think the GSP fight was a favour to Bisping and not to GSP. Bisping was 100% the fall guy in this situation and wasn't going to turn down that kind of money which he would never see the likes of again.

Bisping actually has more in common with Stipe here. Like Bisping, Stipe is the fall guy who is supposed to get stepped on to prove Jones's greatness. Neither Stipe or Bisping are or were pulling the strings. They are just along for the ride.

I feel there are mental health issues with many of the posters on sherdog. People with psychosis sometimes describe being in psychosis as experiencing the world differently, maybe that is what it is. Their idea of reality at that time is different from the people around them. When you think of it like this, the explanation of 'living in a different reality' makes sense and so does some of these threads.

I feel reality sometimes eludes them. It is mostly jones haters and the oddness of their irrational posts, anger in their posts, and incendiary grasp of life. The whole unifying belts is for nerds, and no one cares about that.

Problems here

1. Jones is out with an injury and will be out for an extended time, so he cannot unify anything until he gets back.
2. Jones and Stipe signed the contract before Aspinall was even in the picture as a HW contender for the belt and interim belt that he holds.

These are the two glaring problems with that assessment and reality.

You know he’s off injured right? Why can’t you just wait for him to fight Stipe first?

The UFC wants the Stipe Jones fight!

Did Jones hurt you? Just asking because of the unwarranted hate?!

The guy is injured and just had surgery.. like i know he's a POS and a cheater and all that...but plenty have champions have been allowed to heal and recover as champions and then fight when healthy why cant Jones also do that? ...like what's fair is fair...

Aspinall is in a great position regardless of what Jones does...

Just let the champion heal...FFS

I think Aspinall is still trying to get a money fight with Jones.

It is a bummer the way this thing has drug out. What if Stipe gets injured in training- are we going to wait several more months? It's going to come a time soon to shit or get off the pot.

Similarities are there, sure, but Bisping is still far and away the worst male champ of all time. At least Jones will be defending against the most decorated heavyweight in UFC history. Ping hand-picked 59 year old unranked Hendo for his title defence. He went life and death with Henderson and got the hometown decision gifted to him. No way Jones can do worse than this.

Then along comes GSP and removed that belt from bping. I watched this fight live and enjoyed it immensely

Why would we want the champ fighting an actual contender instead of an unranked fighter?

Geez I wonder why.

They definitely have the same mentality: avoid losing at all costs.

But I will say that Jones has somewhat "earned" the right to ask for such preferential treatment, as one of the GOATS, not that he actually deserves to fight a 45 year old for the "heavyweight championship".

While Bisping literally had two top 10 wins his entire career, and people kept regurgitating the same nonsense that "Bisping deserves a money fight!" When at the time Bisping was already one of the top 5 highest paid UFC fighters of all time.

Bisping and Jon's situations are not the same at all.

Bisping won the title at in June 2016 at UFC 199 and defended against Dan Henderson in Oct 2016 only a 4 month turn around.
Whittaker and Yoel didn't fight for the Interim until June 2017. There was no Interim when he fought Dan Henderson. He was already booked to fight GSP in Nov 2019 when they decided to make Bobby vs Yoel an Interim fight.

Jon's situation is completely different. Jon won a vacant title March 2023 and won't be defending it for probably another 8 months. I bet it ends up being Nov 2024 at MSG again. Jon vs Stipe was booked and Pav was booked as the back up yet they pulled Stipe and put Aspinall vs Pav as an Interim fight. Makes no sense to have a Back Up fighter but not book him vs Stipe. Just like Islam vs Olives had Gamrot as the Back Up but when Olives had to pull out they insert Volk again.

The UFC has recently pressured the LHW champs to vacate when they got injuries that kept them out long term but Jon doesn't get the same. Jon vs Stipe should either be scrapped/shelved and Jon defend against Aspinall or just book that fight for the "Legacy" belt and make Aspinall the Undisputed champion. If the winner of the "Legacy" fight wants a title shot then give it to them but if they both retire then the HW division isn't held up.
