Is 2023 the WORST movie year in history so far?

I see grandfather Nurgle has blessed this film

Great premise and pretty solid overall

The dog scene got an audible gasp out of me lol

As per usual in horror films, this was somewhat tarnished by some unnatural reactions from the characters
the little boy sees his sister getting literally eaten alive by their dog and his reaction is like ohhhh weirdddd, what is this? whats going on here??? how peculiar! then only starts reacting naturally by screaming in horror like 15-20 seconds later

the dad, seeing his small son being held by his demon possessed dead wife, whom he watched die, doesn't IMMEDIATELY try to get his son back and instead watches the demon-dead wife slowly back up to a ledge and jump off

in the final act as they're pulling up the rotten one, surrounded by children that they know are possessed by demons, with the elder demon-experienced lady telling the dad not to listen to the demon spawn, decides to listen to the demon spawn to go get an axe that isn't there, resulting in insta-death for the lady. durrrrr

fuck, yet another one - the dad just sitting there blankly and doing nothing while the nurgle baby walks out and runs his hand over his head. a natural reaction would either be shrieking in horror and running or going primal and trying to rip the child limb from limb.

This type of shit in horror movies is so frustrating, so stupid, and so easily avoidable. It's been the #1 stain on horror movies going back to the very beginning - characters not having natural and logical reactions to what is being presented on screen. Its such an easy thing to remedy and still it keeps happening.

great premise, mostly great execution moderately diminished by classic horror bs in key moments - 7/10

Nice try but The killers is in the wrong spot

has anyone brought up that in 2023, there was a massive strike?

the strike delayed US studio productions almost exclusively, so iirc only some Q4 releases were affected for 2023. there will also be a ripple effect that impacts 2024 studio releases, but i’m not sure how drastic that impact was or will be

fwiw:

there are currently seven 2023 movies in the Letterboxd top 250

Poor Things (129)
The Holdovers (192)
Oppenheimer (159)
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (20)
Monster (230)
Past Lives (189)
