Be careful with this one, because although he did assault you, the fact that there was a pause, you walked away, and then came back and then attacked him, he could technically file an assault charge against you. I know it is crazy because he was the first aggressor, but I believe he can. If there were no witnesses I would delete this post, and claim you responded in self defense after he attacked you. If there was a witness, be prepared for the deadbeat to claim you did harm to him and have him file an assault charge against you. Furthermore, being that is the State of Texas, and there is the "Castle doctrine" he can claim that you were trying to damage his truck and he was protecting his property. But then again I am not a lawyer, however I would be very careful with this.
