Good in training bad in a fight

I was watching Sylvies video on developing ring iq with Attachai by doing lots of different types of play sparring and thought it was great. If you do mostly just mitt and pad work with preset combos, there's a habit of always setting up too close so it takes no extra steps to land. In sparring, you have to navigate that extra step, sometimes more if he retreats. On top of predicting which side your opponent will exit out to steer him into your strikes. If this isn't something you're practicing regularly, it'll feel very awkward in a fight.
