Hi, all. I was sparring the other day. I am an (orthodox) and partner was also an (orthodox) and when I throw my right low kick (usually I set it up with a jab or hook, feint, or I let him step in) but sometimes my partner gets my timing down and catches my right foot real quick with his left hand and launches a looping right to my face. I was wondering what I could do once my leg gets caught? Thanks in advance.

tldr; orthodox v. orthodox. Need help once leg is caught. Ty

this may not work for you, but one thing i found that works a treat, is dragging back the leg they have caught and turning it into a sidekick.

This is one of my favorite counters to a low kick: catching them with a right hand (that's my go-to). I do it all the time. To avoid this, you have to work on getting your head off center. Likely you're keeping it dead on the center line and that's why they're able to catch you.

You could also change it up with instead of always doing a low kick, faking them out and going to the body or head. So they'll think you're going low when you do it a couple of times and then BAM! You change it up and throw them off.

Also, to add a few more notes:

  • Have an exit punch off your kick - e.g., a jab or a cross. Keeping something in their face will make it harder to counter you.
  • When you are throwing your low kick, you can put your glove in their face to "blind" them
  • Make sure that after you throw your kick you're not stopping to admire it's beauty. Throw it and get back to work. A lot of people throw a kick and then expect applause afterwards, leaving them open and vulnerable to a counter.

Fake the low kick an throw a punch when his hand drops.

he should not be reaching very low like that to catch a R kick. its dangerous and leaves him open (it can be done but like i said its dangerous).

you know hes going to catch your R low kick right? so try this.

-fake R low kick, R head kick, his hand will be down, so it should land.
- fake R low kick, R punch.
- theres a few more, i think ill make a video on this, its a good topic.

Fake R low kick, then make coffee whilst he fishes around for the leg to catch............can you include that one?

i know proper kickboxers hate it as it is a really good way to get kicked in the head, but the mma guys love it and some have even learnt to still defend their heads a little. like you say the simplest stuff is usually the best, liking faking to the head punch or kick, but if that doesn't work and they are still catching the kick i found dropping your weight on the front leg and moving in to clinch elbow to be effective. that was before i worked out the side kick counter, it's my favourite kick now. it has actually given meaning to the side kick.

Try what?
throw a side kick off the grabbed leg. they are usually still trying to hang on to it as the kick comes sailing back in. they basically drag themselves into the kick. i randomly tried it sparing one day when i was sick of getting my leg grabbed, and i was shocked at how effective it actually was. if you can throw a decent sidekick i recommend trying it out sometime.

WOW. Great stuff. I'll give it all a shot.

The best thing you can do is understand that there are only two points where you can wisely low kick. Ernesto Hoost, Pornsaneh Sitmonchai, Thiago Alves, Justin Gaethje, great low kickers across all sports know that the only time you throw the low kick is at your opponent is throwing a strike at you, or on the end of your own combination.

Throwing a punch or a teep and following up with a low kick, guarantees the landing in most situations

Equally throwing the low kick as your opponent punches or kicks you, guarantees the landing as their not in a position to check. Before you try to get creative with feinting, just make sure that you're timing your low kicks right.

When you throw a low kick without set up, this can happen:

Silva, a fighter who was never effective on the lead tries to throw a power low kick without any set up and it was a very obvious strike.

If you want to throw a kick to test the waters, use a lead leg kick, or a pendulum kick:

This is a Sagat special and he did it against most of his opponents if not all.

yeah i am guilty myself of grabbing low kicks in a fight, it worked, but its a risky move.

so your saying if someone can grab the kick easily your not throwing it right. i get that, makes sense why my kicks are easy to read. i usually through them hard and on their own.
