Did Cruz get old or was he figured out?

If you watched the Reem documentary, the camera man is allowed to do a sit in and record on Reem's consultation and diagnosis.

The doctor said if you tear your ACL and keep active, the chances are "5X more likely" that it's going to tear again.

The ACL tear is either the end or the beginning of the end.

Don't know if Cody figured him out or he slowed enough due to injuries an age to start to get timed. Could tell in fights leading to Cody he wasn't the same and didn't have same quickness. Like mentioned with his style dependent on quickness it was matter of time
The team prepped for him probably 3-4 times already. They probably broke down his style.

Maybe Uriah saw something but I still think it was mostly due to him slowing down. Then again maybe seeing what became of no Chin I might be biased

Yeah I think Cody was well prepared because his camp knew Cruz quite well.
However, it also was a perfect style match up in hindsight.

The main way to beat Cody is to counter him any punish his defensive flaws.
Most of his losses are due to this.

Cody is incredibly fast and it's partialy due to his defensive flaws. (you tend to be faster and more agile with your chin up in the air)
Cruz however was not able to punish him hard enough to drop/ko Cody or even gain his respect.
Cody's speed + match up knowledge gave him the edge.

But a prime Cruz would beat everyone at the weight class, except O'Malley. If O'Malley's TDD has improved enough to help Cruz get off his nuts, I think he could have beaten Cruz.
What leads you to that opinion? O'Malley's win over Aljo was impressive but aside from that he hasn't done diddly squat. He's an unproven champion who got rushed into a title opportunity because of social media hype.

His decline had more to do with aging and injuries IMO

Depends on fighting style really . For Dom it was a killer. For a grappler Or a power striker not as much

Everything contributed, but you Can’t tear the Acl in both knees and your groin and still hope to be able to change directions so dramatically like some kind of a human joystick.
Achshually the joystick CONTROLS the movements.

Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk

His style was always going to suffer once he started getting older but do you think the game figured him out and other fighters found his weakness or was it a combo of age, slowing down and injuries that led to Cruz slowing down?

"However, on May 7, 2012, Cruz was forced to pull out of the bout citing a torn ACL.[41]"

"On December 3, 2012, it was revealed that Cruz underwent another ACL surgery after his body rejected one from a cadaver, with an expected recovery time of six to nine months"

"Cruz was scheduled to make his return on February 1, 2014, at UFC 169 in a unification bout with interim UFC Bantamweight Champion Renan Barão.[43] However, on a January 6 episode of SportsCenter, UFC president Dana White announced that Dominick Cruz had torn his groin and vacated the UFC Bantamweight Championship; "

"Subsequently, on December 22, 2014, Cruz indicated that he had torn the ACL in his other knee, which sidelined him through 2015."

"Cruz faced Cody Garbrandt on December 30, 2016, at UFC 207. After getting knocked down multiple times during the bout, Cruz lost the bout by unanimous decision.[52] This was the first loss for Cruz in nearly 10 years.[53] Months later, on The Joe Rogan Experience, Cruz revealed that he was plagued by plantar fascia tendinitis throughout training camp that made it difficult for him to walk at times"

"Cruz was expected to face John Lineker on January 26, 2019 at UFC 233.[56] It was reported on December 11, 2018 that Cruz injured his shoulder and pulled out of the fight.[57] Subsequently, Cruz indicated that he expects to be out of competition for another year"

TLDR; tore ACL, had to have it repaired twice. Tore other ACL, tore ligaments in shoulder and missed over a year. Tore his groin (Ouch!) Had a few broken hands, had severe plantar fascitis.

The guy spent his entire prime on the shelf...
He was trying to train like a man when most people his size exercise by playing musical chairs

He got old and other fighters got better. It happens. Gotta remember he was early in the divisions history.

The first person that came to mind regarding the injury was Shogun.

Cruz had the most annoying style of all time.

Utter waste of energy.

Compare cruises style to Joe Louis, absolute opposites.

Cruz expended 900 units of energy to get 100 units accomplished.
Louis 190 units of energy to get 900 units accomplished.

ECONOMY OF MOVEMENT = A Thing

Figured out, and the getting old isn't helping. It just makes him easier to "catch" nowadays. His opponents are both prepared for what he's going to do and his physical skills have gotten worse making it easier to beat him to the punch/position.

Same thing happened to all the dudes who try and fight exactly the same as they always have. Fedor, Edgar, Silva, etc. You can't just compete for a decade plus and not expect your opponents to eventually be prepared for what you're going to do, especially when you're now less powerful at it.

All that experience is wasted when you try and fight like you're still 25. In fact I'd argue you don't have much experience at all if you think you can still get away with fighting like you used to. The real veteran knows they need to switch things up if they want to continue having success.

Garbrandt mocking Cruz's wasted movement mid fight when he's already clowning him earned him many lifetime fans.

Very good fighter, but arrogant as f... Time eventually closed his mouth a little bit.

I hated his stupid ass footwork and the fact that it actually worked in MMA. There were times when he'd actually have his feet completely parallel like he was skiing.
