Best Sports Analogy for Mayweather/Conor?

That doesn't make sense at all. Conor has actually trained boxing since he was 12. When he was 16 he turned to MMA. Toney had probably never trained MMA or any other martial art except boxing in his life.
makes perfect sense. the fight starts standing, so toney has at least one shot to clip couture before he's taken down - that's a puncher's chance. coupled with the fact that couture was a slow moving fighter and he definitely could have caught him with something.

obviously conor has a theoretical 'puncher's chance' as well, but it's much smaller. his training partners (c-level boxers themselves) are toying with him, and you're talking about one of the top 5 greatest boxers ever he's facing. with bigger gloves. the 1% that's going around sounds about right to me.

This is the all world decathlete trying to have a one off race with a 40 yr old Usain Bolt who is nowhere near his best, but should still win easily.

Or better yet, an outstanding athlete who is good at golf having a freakshow round against current Tiger Woods (the G.O.A.T.) claiming that if he does good it shows golf is easy.

If McGregor was really thinking he could beat top boxers, he would box a current top 5 welterweight or junior middleweight. But he never would, because this is just a money grab.

Come to think of it, a very similar fight already happened. Not the boxing freak-show matches, but this one:

A supposed genetic freak (listen to people talk about Conor's punching power and keep in mind that Floyd has fought hard hitters before, numerous times) who's a star from a different sport crosses over and fights the best in his division in their sport.

That single was absolutely beautiful. He did it against JDS too.

An aging, inactive runner against a triathlete who's also the best runner in the world but does triathlon instead because it's a truer indicate of who the best athlete is

Playing Lakers vs. Celtics on the Sega Genesis and then playing NBA 2K16 against human players online....I say that from personal experience :D

Not a sports analogy, but the best analogy about this fight I've seen is: Paying to watch an MMA fighter in a boxing match, or a boxer in an MMA match, is like going to a Mexican restaurant and asking if they can make you lasagna. They probably have most of the ingredients on hand, and if they put in the work, they can come up with something that resembles lasagna, but I guarantee it won't taste the way you were hoping it would.

More like a reserve goal keeper vs Messi lol, good players usually are just as good with Penalty kicks even if they play defense, not only the FW guys like Messi.

Thanks. I'm basing that on my high-school level play and coaching some youth soccer. I wasn't sure about the elites.

It's hard to think of anything similar in other sports. The only two I can think of are

1) A free throw contest between Stephen Curry (around 90% accurate) and Shaquille O'Neal (~ 50% accurate).

2) A penalty kick contest between Messi and a defender who never shoots during games.

In both cases, Shaq and the defender are certainly better than the average guy--even an athletic guy who works out. The same is true of Conor's boxing. But they're taking on specialists who are much better.

Don't like the second one at all. Messi could absolutely lose that.

Yeah, that's pretty good. Music is a good choice, too. One of the world's best bass, banjo or mandolin players trying to outplay a virtuoso guitarist...both using guitars.

Gravedigger entering into a formula one race.

This is the best one for me. If the rules allowed a more aggressive race then Gravedigger wins by crushing all the other cars and coasting to victory, the limited rule set allows the more precise but weaker (strength) car to show it's best attributes.

Lol, something tells me Gravedigger would have problems with dem turns.

Jordan Kilgannon has some imaginative athletic dunks. That could be interesting.
