Best boxing movie?

Not sure why isn't mentioned as the top boxing movie , maybe because of its mainstream success and great actor selection
But real steal is arguably the all time best boxing movie worldwide

I like Tokyo Fist. Pretty crazy movie, has some nice training scenes.

This guy is trolling up in ere.

Most boxing movies are shit.. never really realized until I read through this thread..

I think Million DOllar Baby was good.. Rocky 1 and 2 were great.. the rest had an odd - overproduced thing about them..and Rocky seemed less like an average Joe and more like a character in a movie.. and all the characters were what made them stand out..but on cocaine...The first film was subtle with all that stuff and seemed more realistic..
Somebody up there likes me was good...so was Raging Bull.. Raging Bull is probably the best... also The Fighter was highly decent.. and the Don King movie was pretty good.

the consensus has been that boxing movies do better in hollywood than any other sports movies, but I agree, lots of mediocre/bad ones. Part of the reason is that not everyone knows a lot about the sport and us, with the trained eyes, see through a lot of the bunk. Like Ali said when asked he was going to be an actor "an actor can tell i'm not an actor just like I can tell an actor is not a boxer". I thought the one based on Jackie Kallen, through the ropes or whatever, was garbage, Ali was a huge disappointment, well, i wouldn't call it a disappointment, hollywood churns out crap if they think it'll make money, no surprise there. I think the biggest danger is having directors (like scrocese) who don't have a love or affinity for the sport, it slants it towards what the people who hate boxing generally focus on.

Its clearly Rocky or Raging Bull.
Anything else is a waste of an opinion.

I thought Ali was perfectly cast, but horribly paced, written, and directed.. Jamie Fox and Will SMith killed it though.. you know one of my favorite boxing movies wasn't even in theatres.. and it was perfectly cast as well.. Tyson

I guess I'd say the same as King: Rocky 1, Rocky 4, and Cinderella Man would be my go to movies.

Am I the only one here that loves boxing but isn't really into boxing movies? I love documentaries and all that but I could never really get into movies based on boxing.

all the superficial shit was great but those things are doable, it's a lot harder to put the thought, research and creativity into the really important things. It was a cop out, will and jamie and the rest did great though. Someday someone will make the epic Ali deserves and not some cash in effort.

When it comes to movies and sports, boxing definitely has the best movies.

Off topic but Major League is probably my favorite sports movie.

Just watched southpaw... fucking garbage

The Korean film Crying Fist is great

Second this. I really enjoyed this movie.

Southpaw could have been so much better. I knew when I saw some of the producers and executive producers, that it would be some sort of fusion between cheap asian styled films mixed with hollywood; kind of like Green Hornet or Cradle to the Grave with Jet Li. The edgy hip hop crap, style, ruined it for me personally. Just gave it a cheap feeling. Gynllenhaal was great, too bad the writing, character development, and flow of the movie sucked.

Havent seen that many, but The Fighter was very good, Rocky movies are way over the top with their "resistance" or lack of defense, also the refferee doesnt care one bit for the fighters as long as they come up before the count ends, doesnt matter how blodied or how many times they fall, this adds to the drama, but come on.

Southpaw was a good one imo.

gotta rewatch Raging Bull. Saw it years ago, thought it was good even though I'm not a fan of black and white movies, but don't remember it that well. DeNiro and Scorsese are beasts (Goodfellas is legend), should watch it again soon.

gotta see anything affiliated with rocky, even though it most likely will be mediocre, same thing as when Balboa came out, which in its own way was better than any of the others outside the first two.

Goodfellas might be the greatest movie ever.

Watching Creed simply for the affiliation to Rocky.

Personal favorite boxing movies:
-Raging Bull
-Cinderella Man
-Fighter (I'm a Micky Ward mark though)

Rocky 1 is 1000% better than Rocky 4.

Rocky 1 is a beautifully filmed character study, with really authentic shots of Philadelphia, a classic romance between basically a thug and a shy girl, lots of surprisingly sharp humor, and miles of heart. Not to mention it's iconic score. Go back and watch the scene when Mickey goes to Rocky's house for the first time to offer to be his manager, it's an amazing scene.

Rocky 4 is a really fun anti-Soviet propaganda movie. It's great for what it is, but it's not much more than that.

Rocky 1 and Raging Bull are obviously the best. We're talking Oscar-winning classics that are an everlasting part of American culture.

I thought the Trailed showed the whole movie. So the whole movie is garbage?

Anyone pLanning to see creed?

Ill watch Creed.. not getting my hopes up though.. What made Rocky and First Blood good was Stallone slow pace and realistic writing style.. he lost that shit for both of the franchises and they became action movies...

For Southpaw... Spoilers DOnt read if ya dont wanna know

They straight up jacked Rocky! The movie is called Southpaw because Gilinhall trains to surprise an opponent by switching stances..its not even elaborated on..it seems very thrown together.. next they stole the scene where Duran boxes circles around rocky..they subbed Victor Ortiz... next they stole the "your losing your house Rocky" story line...Blatant

The story is stupid as hell... the daughter is an asshole...Jake is a goodhearted dumbass.. 50 cent is an evil promoter with no personality.. and there are all these mini-storylines that are more interesting than the main storyline but don't get resolved

and it has a speedbag montage for a 48-1 fighter.. if he can't hit the fucking speedbag by then....lol

the only thing good about the entire movie is Jake does a pretty good job at portraying a completely broken person

I actually have never seen Great White Hype. Is it on Netflix?

I wish Jamie FOx would make a Carl The Tooth movie

stallone is a really fascinating guy, my brother saw him in seattle some 20 years ago and as people were waiting for him to get out of his limo, the crowd burst out laughing when they saw how small he was. also, richie giachetti tells some great stories about stallone in the 80's seeking out white fighters and asking Giachetti "where are the good white heavyweights" and Giachetti tells him honestly "they're aren't any". and he says that stallone came on all fucked up at first saying he was rocky and giachetti told him "no one gives a shit" but then saying that stallone was actually a real good hearted guy. Poor guy gets pegged for being a dummie too, when he actually wrote the rocky script and was more responsible for his success, creative wise, than most people in hollywood, even though he isn't much of an actor.

Yup.. only person I know of that basically did so much good shit that people dont even know he was in porn... That's why he was resisted so much.. people wanted his script but not him because of the porn history..he took less so they would take him...

I read 2 funny stories about the rocky films.. 1) Stallone thought he really knew how to box and challenged Dolph Lundgren to a sparring sesh...filming had to be delayed because he got fucked up... 2) Tommy Morrison sued Stallone for landing a punch in the filming of Rocky 5....

I don't know if they are true but Ive heard them from different people throughout the years..

Last story is that he sold his dog in front of a liquor store when he was broke..and then his film hit and he got money and went and stood in front of that store every day waiting for the guy to come back so he could buy his dog back... eventually he did come back buy Stallone had to pay a shitload to get the dog back.

I personally liked Rocky 1 or 2

the dolt lundgren thing was true, he could have died, he told dolph to really let loose, just like he idiotically told shavers to let loose. he could actually get physical somewhat though, i recall reading a story that he broke someones ribs after rocky. also, dolph sounded like a true asshole, carl weathers stormed out of the set when he was getting to real with him. never heard morrison sued him, i doubt that one. doesn't make sense, what would one measly punch mean to a guy who fights for a living? I was always curious however how sly felt about morrison turning out such a lost cause, he was trying to give him a big break with that movie.

oh yea, i do recall tommy beating up extras on the set. sounds like him, he was a troublemaker wherever he went.

sure, but i just don't believe it, he did break a stuntman's jaw on the set, morrison that is, i don't think he'd sue anyone over a real fight, let alone rocky.
