If it's under $100 a month it's fine. The good associations will police the fuck out people with shitty looking properties and that is especially important in condensed neighborboods.
My HOA keeps the roads and sidewalks looking fresh and hire landscapers to mow our front lawns. The trash pickup is very liberal and snow removal is decent so it's pretty nice for $68 a month.
Truth is, if you live in a major metro area, you cannot avoid a HOA or condo fee unless you can afford a 700k+ mortgage or are fine living near shitty schools or way out with long commutes.
