Hasbro laying off Wizards of the Coast staff is baffling — and could lead to a brain drain

A new round of layoffs at Hasbro has impacted its subsidiary Wizards of the Coast, despite Wizards’ strong recent performance and its status as a linchpin for Hasbro’s overall revenue stream. The result could spell trouble for both companies as they head into 2024.
Hasbro announced Monday that it would eliminate an additional 1,100 workers throughout its global operations, as part of what CEO Chris Cocks called a “strategic transformation.” This was on top of previously announced cuts in January.
It was initially unclear as to whether those layoffs would hit Renton, Wash.-based Wizards of the Coast, which seemed like it might’ve been protected given its value to Hasbro’s portfolio.
Cliffs:
-Hasbro's revenue and stock price haven't been doing so well as of late
-Hasbro laid off 1,100 Wizards of the Coast employees just 2 weeks before Christmas. After already laying off 800 earlier in the year
-Hasbro's gaming segment has been its only consistently profitable segment, growing revenue by 40% in Q3 alone
-Hasbro posted a gross profit of 3.9 billion in 2022
-In 2022 MTG recorded revenue exceeding 1 billion dollars for the first time ever
This type of shit never ceases to amaze me. How corporate executives can sleep at night after treating the people that make them millions of dollars and provide them with a luxurious life, with such disdain and contempt, is mind-blowing.
It's just so unbelievably short sighted. Even from a self interested perspective. What kind of business and work environment does this create in a company? When success is punished how is anyone going to strive to make your business successful?
