We take a look at what makes the Diaz brothers tick.

War. It’s as much a part of the history of humanity as anything you could ever possibly think of. As deplorable and regrettable as it might be, for thousands of years people have fought amongst themselves for their land, for their wealth, for their honour and even just to satisfy that undeniable craving that has always been – and will continue to be – a mainstay in the human condition that has been with us from our earliest days right up until now.

And though, in the modern day, war is still as prevalent as it has ever been, we now see more commercialised and structured ways for the warriors within our society to vent their lust for action. Just like the gladiators of old, in present-day combat sports, we have a select number of men and women who perhaps – had they been born in a different time or place – would be the very ones leading the charge on a soon-to-be-bloodied battlefield, with both sword and shield in hand as they prepare to express themselves in their rawest form.

Though many fighters in the UFC fit these criteria, there are few who would argue that the classical notion of the ‘warrior’s spirit’ is embodied – perhaps more than anyone – by the brothers Diaz, Nick and Nate.

"The fact that neither Diaz has been finished in the last 10 years......"

So this article was written before the Thomson fight?

War is, and has been for several centuries, about using your brains and fighting intelligently, taking smart risks and avoiding dumb ones, in adapting your tactics to force your opponent to fight where you're the strongest and they're the weakest, to retreat when necessary in order to counter-attack at a time you're likely to succeed. Warriors are men who can think under fire, who react in a way to achieve the mission goal, however that is defined.

In the fight between Nick and Condit, Condit was the one who fought like a warrior, like someone who was trained to fight on a modern battle field. Diaz, who just marched forward with no adaption to what Condit did, with no plan B, fought like an infantryman of centuries ago, when generals sent soldiers out to march straight into then enemies fire. Anyone who's been through even basic training in any branch of the military will tell you that.

There's a lot to be said for the Diaz's, they're tough, they're persistent, they're give it their all and aren't afraid to take or give punishment. But they're not adaptable enough, not tactical enough to be great warriors.

i do think they believe that if they didn't get hurt that badly they didn't lose. take A Silva v Nick. in Nicks head, he didn't really get hurt therefore he didn't lose, regardless of the fact Silva landed more than Diaz even threw (i just pulled that stat out of my ass, it is not a fact).

you can see the same thing in all their losses, including Nick v GSP and Nate v Bendo.

it's not a very sophisticated approach to scoring a fight. but no one has ever accused them of sophistication.

i've been a big fan since seeing Nate v Lawler I live, and i'm happy they finally got paid. i hope it gives them the financial security they need to find, if not happiness, then at least contentment. and if that happiness is outside the fight game, sucks for me, but i'm happy for them.

Nate got knocked out by Thomson and still was saying he's a coward who ran away and hits like a girl afterwards. These guys are completely delusional.
